From Jeremy Bowen, chief political journalist in the middle-east for the BBC.
Israel is accused of the gravest war crimes - how governments respond could haunt them for years to come
If one side has suffered a brutal surprise attack that killed hundreds of civilians, as Israel did on 7 October 2023, it does not get an exemption from the law. The protection of civilians is a legal requirement in a battle plan.
That, at least, is the theory behind the Geneva Conventions. The latest version, the fourth, was formulated and adopted after World War Two to stop such slaughter and cruelty to civilians from ever happening again.
At the headquarters of the International Committee of the Red Cross in Geneva (ICRC) the words "Even Wars Have Rules" are emblazoned in huge letters on a glass rotunda.
The reminder is timely because the rules are being broken.
I have also spoken to distinguished lawyers; to humanitarians with years of experience of working within the law to bring aid to Gaza and other warzones; and to senior Western diplomats about their governments' growing impatience with Israel and nervousness that they might be seen as complicit in future criminal investigations if they do not speak up about the catastrophe inside Gaza.
It’s already dividing Israeli society. And this Gaza business together with the attacks abd expansion on the West Bank are really going to make Israeli “the bad guy” for years to come.
Has anyone changes their views on Israel’s behaviour the last year, in light of the ever worsening human suffering and calls for the total annilation of Gaza (and even calls from people in the Israeli administration to rid all of Palestine from Palestinians)?
Is there still anyone who will sit by and state that Israel’s behaviour towards Palestinians is acceptable?
@shavixmir said😂. So much hate, so little time
So, somw numbnuts of a yank squeals: “in our time there will not be a Palestinian state.”
Best to end his bloody time then.
@shavixmir saidI used to think that Israel could co-exist with a Palestine state, but it is clear that that is no longer true. The Jews have turned into fascists and Nazis trying to seize more land by committing ethnic cleansing and genocide - which is exactly what Hitler tried to do to them.

Ironic, eh? And quite the shame. Nietzsche warned them not to become what they hate, but, they didn't listen...
The just solution would be to forcibly relocate the Jews to a place where they can do no further harm., then dismantle Israel into a Palestinian Muslim state for the Arabs to sort out. But the World does not have the Political Will to do justice at this stage. 🙂

Madagascar, perhaps?
I know the idea is recycled from your intellectual heroes, but that doesn't automatically impeach it.
@sh76 saidJust solution? I think Russia. The place is rapidly depopulating and many came from there anyway. 😆

"I'll take 'Things That Won't Happen' for $400 please, Alex." 😆
@spruce112358 saidYou have a very poor understanding of world affairs. It has nothing to do with political will. People just do not care about Muslims and least of all Gaza Muslims. Islam is a horrendous religion, and there have been countless threads about why this is the case, and Gazans in particular is living proof that Islam is evil.

@Rajk999 saidWhether or not Zionism or Islam are good/bad/evil, how does it benefit American citizens for our government to continually fund and arm Israel, when a very large portion of the world's population believes we are aiding in genocide?

@sh76 saidBy the way, @sh76, it is Zionists and Nazis who are intellectual bedfellows.

I want nothing to do with either. 😆
@Sleepyguy saidAmerica gives out an avg of $70 Billion US annually in aid to countries all over the world. Only a handful of these are countries which can benefit US taxpayers. Israel only on average receives $3 billion, is one of these countries which benefit to the US. Some of these countries receiving US aid want Americans dead. Maybe you should concern yourself about those people.

US taxpayers who complain the US is financing genocide do not know the facts, they do not understand the word 'genocide', and many are Jew-haters. In any case the US still has a very powerful Jewish lobby who are able to influence these events and continue assisting Israel.
One benefit to the US is that Israel has been able to eliminate the nuclear capability of all of these extremist Islamic states {Iraq, Syria and Iran] who have already threatened Israel and the US. Be thankful about that.
@Rajk999 saidIf we weren't supporting Israel, Muslims would pose no threat to the United States. 😆

After WW2 America was hugely popular in the Muslim world - much more so than Britain or France because we never made colonies out of them.
We wasted ALL that good will and put ourselves in DANGER by insanely and blindly supporting this stupid Zionist project called 'Israel.'
End it already. Put the people back where they came from and go back to peace and security. 😆
