I was under the impression that retaliation is what happens after someone else starts it. After that it is not retaliation. It is escalation, isn't it?

Israel is about to start a war with Iran. Stop calling starting a war retaliation. Retaliation can only happen once. Calling something a retaliation in response to a retaliation is an attempt to mislead people into thinking Israel did not start it.
Who started it is important. Israel started it. Iran merely retaliated. A retaliation to a retaliation is not a retaliation. It is starting a war.

Normally people start with a small squabble, and one one point the escalation is so far that one feels the "first" attack and then there is the "first" retatliation. The opponent might feel this "retaliation" as "first" attack and here we are.
