I agree with much of what you are saying, however, the need for religion (or some system of morality) arises precisely because we don't live in a 'self-regulating' system where hard work/ virtue etc. are rewarded. Power will always try to draw more to itself and must be resisted on moral (spiritual) grounds as well as in practical (material) matters. The vast increase in scientific knowledge and the power that in can place in 'unworthy' (greedy/ selfish etc.) hands in combination with the collapse of the religious conception of the world has led us to the brink of catastrophe that we now stand upon.

What exactly is Iran doing that is a threat to the USA?

Trump is doing more to destroy the US' trade with the world than Iran is. Shooting at ships in the "Persian" Gulf just encourages trade inside the USA, same as tariffs do.
