@athousandyoung saidNo, it's not.
A representative Republic IS a Democracy.
A democracy is where the majority rules.
No matter how despotic or tyrannical.

Representative democracy is a government system that creates an extra stage between public votes and law creation. Instead of voting for laws, citizens elect officials to craft, debate, and sign laws. The idea is that citizens trust those elected politicians to carry out the will of those that elected them.
This is the most popular way of governing, with 60 percent of nations using representative democracy with elected officials. The United States is a prime example, with its houses and political parties.
@sonhouse saidYeah, that'll guarantee that people in huge metropolitan mega-cities that have never even visited a farm can enact policy to govern nationwide agriculture. People who think chocolate milk comes from chocolate cows will decide the path of the American farmer.
@AverageJoe1
You don't know the definition of democracy? That part where voters decide who is the next office holder, whatever that is? One problem with ours is the electoral college, a leftover from a time when votes were tabulated by dudes bringing in pouches with voter info riding on horseback so it could take weeks before an election was totally tabulated but we are way ...[text shortened]... o you get more votes, you win.
We are the only country in the world with that ancient outdated POS.
I pledge allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America, and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands.
I don't know you, Sonhouse. We seem to get along just fine when we discuss science, but you seem absolutely eaten alive with hatred at any slight hint of a differing view from yours, politically. Do you know the definition of "republic?"

@sonhouse saidIt would be the best comedy team since,
So it looks like it will be a fight between two charming characters, Carlsen and DeSantis.
The main talk there will be who will destroy our democracy FIRST?
Authoritarian government looks to be the future of the US.
Hope all you ultrarightwingnuts will be happy about that.
Don't say it couldn't happen here because our democracy is ALREADY treading thin ice and it won't take much to topple it completely and that Fuker Tucker could be the one who kills it here.
''Abbot and Costello.''
...........Who's on first, I dunno'
.............Third base.
...C'mon Sonhouse, lighten up.....
can you imagine the fun generated,
for late night hosts, by this dynamic duo?
@sonhouse saidOh Cthulhu, I do hope Carlsen. His meltdown will be so much more entertaining!

@sh76 saidHe's apparently not even intelligent to spell his name right...
Like him or hate him, Carlson is far too intelligent
Seriously, though - that face? That gurn? "Intelligent"!? I've met cocker spaniels more intelligent than that gob, and they're the breed of dog most likely to think not voting is a good idea.
@athousandyoung saidAnd the USA would be, if it actually were even remotely representative.
A representative Republic IS a Democracy.
(The same snark can be made about the UK, by the way.)
@athousandyoung saidWell... the first paragraph of that is true, at least...https://constitutionus.com/democracy/what-is-a-representative-democracy/

@sonhouse saidI want Sonuouse's definition. It is obviously different than the accepted definition of Democracy.

You might note that I have asked him 10 times for the definition. He writes back that I don't answer questions . So I naturally say, 'really? Tell me when I have not answered a question".
Never get a response to that, either .

The problem with majority vote policies is it can get out of hand quickly.
You are suggesting that the majority must be smarter about voting in new policies and you are wrong. You are also suggesting that the majority won't use that voting power to their advantage and you are wrong.
I'll give you an example...
25 percent of Americans own 3 vehicles.
Car for work, Van for mom and kids and your motorcycle etc etc.
The other 75 percent do not and they just voted a new policy where each family can only own one vehicle.
Some agents will be by to take 2 of your 3 vehicles.
The majority has voted. So you agree with their decision?
@athousandyoung saidAnd that's what sonhouse wants.
And you claim to have been a teacher…a Republic is a representative democracy. You are talking about DIRECT Democracy.
Majority vote rules. (Not recommended)
