sod categories - they're just a means to make more "winners" so that more ego's can be stroked.
Everyone submit one piece of work, everyone votes for their top 5, points are added up to show who is the winner.
Easy.
Now, go practice.
I only suggested a different rule set once the organiser had announced they were stepping down.
I would join in be there categories or not, but it seems some folk want to be so specific about categories for whatever motive, that were I the organiser I'd have also sacked off bothering.
Are you willing to manage the comp, with the original categories?
There ya go... jumping to conclusions.
Nice to see Demonseed is in charge.
Originally posted by demonseedI got everything to work on my laptop when I was out of town, now back home and put moz on the PC and Gspace, but when I do a login it gives me this cookie can't be processed error or something like that. Anyone know what to do about that? The FAQ's mention this as the first fact and talk about something about your firewall but never ran into this problem before.
You can submit as many entries as you like.
Anyone?
Originally posted by demonseedRHB aside, when you have even chess competitions you have a separate one for juniors, one for A players, B, etc., so you don't have a bunch of B players having to compete against GM's and such. Nothing wrong with catagories I think. How can you vote a cover vs a dance thing or an instrumental solo against a band? Anyway thats my thinking on the subject. Don.
If I pick the categories now as arbitrary leader I would be guilty of selection bias.
PS I did that joke!
Originally posted by sonhouseThe problem, as I see it, is that the categories don't really help much to make it more comparable. You can get a cover of a pop song played by a beginner in the same category as a jazz standard played by an advanced amateur and a classical piece played by a professional musician. That's not really any more comparable than a dance thing and a band, and it's a bit unfair for the beginner.

Originally posted by NordlysBut that would mean having like 15 catagories, we didn't get many more entrants last time, so what do you do about that, nood? Did you get all that stuff downloaded, fox, gspace? I can't get the login to work on this PC.

I have put Spysweeper and AVG to sleep, killed windows firewall, intalled Java updates and all that stuff to no avail. I had been out of town and used my laptop, at a hotel having WIFI and used it to record the two entries I put up here. In the Hotel I had no trouble downloading or activating Gspace but here can't login, it says 'Cookie Retrieval failed' which you would think attributed to a firewall thing but I am running barenaked now, no condoms!
And still it won't login. I was thinking one thing left might be the wireless router so I have to go to linksys and remember the address to go into the router and kill all ITS protections and see if that makes a diff.
One way occurs to me, use the laptop that worked in the hotel and try it on our own wireless network, if IT logs in ok, then it must be some attribute of the PC not the net. Back to the drawing board for me.
I already entered two pieces so everyone ELSE can view it. I assume we all are going to have to have Gspace to access the music files? Don't see any way around it. If I can't login I can't participate. Wonder if anyone else has had this problem. Don.
I figured it out. Login requires it to be RHPMusic not rhpmusic. Case sensitive, if its all lower case, gspace gives one of these: Cannot Retrieve cookie. When upper cases are in the right order, it's happy and login goes fine.
At the minute I can discern four entries:
"Skating On Frozen Lake"
"Red Hot Rag"
"Taking Back Sunday" and the imaginatively entitled,
"Instrumental Not A Cover Hence No Original Artist's Name"
I don't have authors for the first two but I think I can make an educated guess but rather than doing that if the musician could just PM me to confirm.
Keep the entries coming in please, I shall be downloading them to my hard drive to protect against disasters but keep your own copied somewhere too just in case.
The provisional date for all entries is August 15th. If anybody feels this is unfair please PM me and we can extend it a bit. Obviously if you have already recorded something then upload it to GSpace. It's not the most intuitive system but people seem to be managing and if you have any difficulties either post in this thread or the other music thread and someone will be able to assist you.
PS I am not sure how the pieces/songs are going to be finally hosted so that they can be judged by our RHP peers. I mean it won't be a case of trawling through the GSPace inbox like I just did, will it?
If anybody knows how GSpace can host the pieces/songs for a suitable way of judging each piece let me know since I have never used this system before and have better things to do with my time (like writing my Master's dissertation) than going through the GSpace help). By anyone of course I mean Starrman who really deserves credit for finding this program in the first place.
Good luck all, I enjoyed listening to your different ways of expressing yourselves: I sensed pain but also light at the end of the tunnel.
Originally posted by sonhouseI don't think we'd need 15 categories, I just think the categories might not be the best to make it more comparable. I liked demonseed's idea to decide the categories after the entries have come in, so that you could both try to group pieces that are somewhat comparable and make sure you have enough entries in each category. But I see hopscotch's point that this would likely cause a lot of drama...
But that would mean having like 15 catagories, we didn't get many more entrants last time, so what do you do about that, nood?
Originally posted by demonseedI believe it was meant to stay on GSpace, and I find that a lot easier than downloading it from a website like we had to do the last time. I am wondering if you are actually logging into the gmail account, rather than using the GSpace extension? When I open the account in GSpace, I get folders for each category. I can then open the folder, or I can simply download the whole folder to where I want to have it. It could hardly be simpler or tidier. The only problem is that you need to use Firefox to do it this way. But if you don't, you can still log into the gmail account and download the files.

How do you log in your way?

Yes that's what I am doing.
How do you log in your way?
Once that's installed, you can find GSpace under "Tools" (or whatever it is called in English - the menu that has Options, your extensions, downloads etc.). If you click on it, it will open in a new tab. Under "Manage Accounts", you can set up a new account.
Gmail Id: rhpmusic@googlemail.com
Password: competition
Then you should be able to log in.
