They can be very good for some, and mediocre for others. It depends on how seiously you subscribe to the steps and how much you are dedicated to getting clean. I wish you all the luck in the world. You have a never ending climb ahead of you.

I decided to avoid any anonymous group which requires that the first thing you do is stand up and tell everyone your name.

Yes they can do a lot of good. But it will be up to you what kind of life you want for yourself. You can make the program work for you if you can take life one day at a time.

One of my heroes is 20 years sober, one day at a time.

He may have a drink someday - but it won't be today.
