This is only because Apple have tried to make it appear much better than a normal MP3 player but it still plays MP3 files - If i look at the files on my iPod they are *.MP3 files - even if Apple dont want to call it an MP3 player, it plays [b]MP3 files, which makes it ... you guessed it ... an MP3 player - there 1). Just like a MAC or Linux machine is still a computer regardless of operating system.[/b]
AIFF is also apples own (co)-developed file format, again I'd be surprised if their own hardware didn't play their own files!
Edit- of course, should you only load it with mp3's then it is effectively exclusively an mp3 player.
Also - My Sony mp3 player also plays m4a files - it doesn't pick up the track numbering so plays albums in alphabetical order - but this refutes the point made earlier that no other mp3 players can play m4a.

Someone (usually either a small electronics company or a dodgy Polish bloke with a soldering iron and shed full of electronics) has bought all the parts to build an MP3 player at wholesale and stuck them in a unbranded Apple iPod case.
If you bought it, it would probably work for a few months but don't expect much more than that.
