The post that was quoted here has been removedOver time it's amazing what latches into your startup routines in windows. A lot of processes that run are running on the 'off chance' that they'll be needed.
For example - Real Player is bad for this - once installed, registry entries are added so that each time you start your PC it starts up a process that will make the real player start faster when you need it - great - if you use real player - otherwise it's just a resource hog.
Lots of programs have these 'helper' apps that are only there to enhance their own programs performance.
If you're not comfortable checking / changing the registry startup values, then get something like spybot (http://www.spybot.info) to do it for you.
Use taskmanager to see what's eating resource when it's slow and try and work out if the thing running is needed or not.
Try not to have so many programs running at the same time - just have what is really needed.
Also run crap cleaner to clear all the un-needed stuff.
ccleaner is a free prog that clears all temporary files etc.
Scan with Adaware and Spybot and remove all the adware and stuff it finds. [also both free]

*More RAM would be good too - as said.
Downloading loads of music and films always slows mine down.
The post that was quoted here has been removedMore ram is vital.
Soulseek is a memory hog. Fritz also uses serious memory. 20 tabs on FF would also use a lot. If you have your media library loaded in winamp, then that would also contribute to slow down.
I wouldn't recommend using soulseek at the same time as Fritz.
Use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go into Task Manager, and then click on the processes tab, and sort by Mem Usage. You'd be amazed how much memory a program like Soulseek or Frtiz uses.
If you want to continue using those programs at the same time, I'd recommend maybe 2 gig as opposed to 1.
