When your father told you to go out back and cut a switch, what was worse?
Walking outside with a knife looking for a proper branch to cut and skin in anticipation of the whup'n you were going to get?
or
The whup'n?

Both the cutting and the beating sucked.

I read what a lot of you were saying about smacking kids and how it's okay to do it once and a while and "not so hard" (that's a laugh). And then I read about Crowley being all proud that his Dad hit him once and a while. I nearly threw up in my mouth.
My Dad used to discipline me a lot when I was young. I didn't get the switch, or the belt, or the paddle. I either got a swift kick in the ass or a good ol' hard spanking. He didn't hit repeatedly, just once, but I would always be in tears. Once my sister was crying somewhere in another room and woke my Dad up, assuming I did something wrong he just walked over to me and gave me a stiff one across the ass. He wasn't abusive. This didn't happen all the time but when I was bad it was rare that I'd get anything else other than a smack.
You know what I learned from all that discipline?
That my Dad wasn't patient enough to deal with his children in a civilised or even caring way. He only did what his Mom used to do to him when he was a kid. He thought it was normal. It's a shortcut to get what you want. Intimidate the child and it will listen.
To this day my Dad is still impatient, has a terrible temper and responds emotionally when challenged. I think had he not just always reared back and clocked us at a moment's notice and had actually taken the time to talk to his children, it would have made HIM a better person.
Think about that.
