The two ships lay anchored in Firien Bay, just between the coast of Troll Island and the coastal reefs off Lug Gurzun. Not so long ago the ships carried the elite troops of the Forkbeard Marines; a combined force of the best troops of Clan Forkbeard and the Corsairs of Argonath. The Marines were sent to pacify the island in the name of the Empire of Valdemar, but from what the sailors could tell, things hadn't quite worked out as expected.
After sailing around the island, the Marines decided to land on the northern shore in an open strip between the marshes in the east and the woods in the west. The Men and Dwarves got into their small landing crafts and landed ashore. Their discipline showed as they quickly chose a position for their base camp in a relatively rocky raised area, scouted the immediate terrain, and then dug in. Faster than the sailors thought possible the marines dug out a ditch and rampart to protect their position. Then a fence of sharpened stakes was raised on the rampart and by nightfall there was a miniature fortress on the beach where there had been none before!
All seemed peaceful and in order. Scouts were sent into the marshes and the woods. One party was attacked by a troll that had been hiding in a lake or pool of some sort in the swamp and quickly slew it, though it overturned a boat before it died and drowned a few Rune Guards. Morale remained high as the marines continued to scout out the island.
However the skirmishes continued. Trolls attacked from the bushes; they dropped out of the trees; they coated themselves in mud and hid in the muck. Slowly the numbers of the marines dwindled, though more and more Troll corpses were thrown on the great pyre outside of the Forkbeard camp.
One day a scout found the Troll town. It was hidden deep in the marshes. It was built around a half submerged cave complex and had walls built from old, rotting (though sturdy) logs.
The marines moved into the marsh to clear the island of any further resistance and to spread the light of civilization to any Trolls that surrendered and swore fealty to the Clan.
They didn't return. The little Forkbeard fort was still there among the rocks, but no one was in it. The sailors never saw any of the Marines again.

I find the Boar Tusk Tribe's announcement interesting. Very cryptic.
