Lol I knew you would not let me down.

If we are agreed that there is no such thing as a great man or woman and that we are all just prisoners or beneficiaries of the history that takes place around us,
then no Churchill was not a great man and certainly not a nice one but total war has no place for either.

I believe He was the right man, and I do not agree that any half competent prime minister would have sufficed, any more than a half competent president
could have got the U.S through the great depression and WWII not only unscathed but emerging as the global super power.

What Churchill was great at was oratory, pragmatism, and the guts to call a spade a spade.

My old mum hated him for apparently sending a lot of Scottish soldiers to their deaths needlessly or for cold strategic reasons.

However he was warning the world about the threat posed by nazi Germany when most of the British establishment were tripping over themselves to kiss Hitlers backside.

I also remember how 'on the money' his 'Iron Curtain' speech was, whilst most people adopted the same strategy of appeasement in regard to Stalin as they employed in regard to Hitler, Churchill was definitely greater than them.

It would appear to be Duchess64 who can read but lacks comprehension, duchess64 is obviously well read, however if Duchess64 brings as much analytical prowess to their extensive library as they have to my post then we have lost them trees to no avail.

"Apparent worship"

Just gone back and read my post 3 times and for the life of me I cannot imagine where Duchess64 could have found me worshiping Churchill.

The Eastern Front cost Germany the war, and yes America and Russia pretty much carved Europe up into spheres of influence, but how does that perfidious act detract from Churchill's opposition to it? Are you confusing brute strength with greatness.

"With regard to the importance of Churchill in winning the war, by 1945"

I am beginning to wonder if Duchess64 is pulling my leg, please enlighten me as to where in my post I claimed that Churchill won the war, everyone knows it was Audie Murphy n John Wayne.

BTW us nationalistic, close minded ignoramus's are not the nemesis of you scholarly historians, it would appear to be your over inflated ego's, and an apparent inability to communicate with us laymen that renders your efforts in-effectual.

The voice of football reason good ol' spurs73. While entertaining we prefer to talk footie in this here thread, right!? I hope tomorrow's final is enjoyable regardless of who wins it! However, that said, I am rooting for La Scuadra Azzurra all the way!

yes Duchess we do not always agree and many times you have called me out for some
inaccuracy of statement, some ill conceived remark or some pretentious gibberish, that
is fine, I dont mind, I like free form jazz and talking nonsense now and again, never
the less, I remain an unashamed admirer of your posts, for so many times, the thread
downwardly spirals into incessant bickering over trivialities, misconstrued perceptions
over projections of ignorance and counter assertions of a similar nature the result
being that everyone is chasing shadows and the thread crashes and burns in a heap of
smouldering ad hominess (i realise its not a real word) and abusive logical fallacy.
Added to this is a somewhat pedantic fetish for forum etiquette, with impassioned cries
of 'its the sports forum spanky.' One can only hope that such sticklers for etiquette
remember their manners when shouting at the referee for some erroneous decision!

doesn't it make for such an interesting collage? the Latin emotionalism of scacchi on a
high as his team rises like a phoenix from the ashes of disaster, to challenge for the
right to be crowned Kings of Europe, the vitriol of shallow blue as he disdains all who
oppose his point of view in high minded fashion as if he's beating a colonial slave for
some misdemeanour , the calls to reason of Dutchess on the basis of recent findings
rather than an emotional attachment to some manufactured archetype from antiquity,
indeed, what an awesome thread.

"All stats favor Italy"?
Ha ha ha! Took the bait! Of course they do! Germany had two days additional rest because the tournament wanted them to win. That's all a well rested team could muster against a team that had played 120 minutes. Are you saying Germany dominated? LOL! Could not muster a goal with all those shots? I am telling you it was a good ol' fashioned spanking. They looked as frustrated as the partisan German crowd! Now you're gonna tell me the best team lost? Italy needed only two shots. These went in. Neuer, alleged first GK on earth could not stop anything. You rely too much on # of shots. Only the ones going in show up on scoreboard! Germany had scored 9 goals going into semifinal, won 15 games in a row, had two days more rest and could not score until 92 mintues (two into injury time) and a ticky-tacky PK at that. Watch the game again if you DVR'd it! Total beatdown! About the most exciting thing they could muster was the Neuer header as he was moving forward in injury time to avoid conceding a third! That was awesome. Did Italy seem rattled to you? Not one bit, did they. Total control and awesome display of dominant defense! DEFENSE! Wins championships!

You said "All stats favor Italy" but it isn't true. You enjoying Italy's performance in their well deserved win over Germany is one thing, but silly hyperbole passed off as analysis and telling little lies about the match stats are quite unnecessary. 😡
