Panino Melanzane Grigliate!
(Grilled Eggplant Sandwich)
- A nice firm slice of grilled eggplant; thickly sliced fresh "Bufala" mozzarella; thinly sliced "Roma" tomatoes; freshly chilled leaves of garden basil, a quick drizzle of extra-virgin olive oil, balsamic vinegar and coarsely ground black pepper all layered between two thin slices of freshly baked Italian bread .

(Feel free to bring a fork to table...you'll want every crumb.)

-Removed-
you must crisp the bacon and let it cool.

Reuben.
seconded, with caveat,
i first learned of the reuben at a deli in st louis, after i had taken a job there...
ever since, i have been disappointed in the offerings from other sandwich shoppes and delis, they just haven't been that great...
and don't get me started on that imposter from schlotsky's...

i haven't even been able to recreate it myself...
i think it may have to do with the dressing, but, not sure...
i am also handicapped by a palette semi-destroyed by southern cooking...

Some delis have what it takes, some don't. Best dressing IMO is Durkee Sauce.

"Bitey cheese"? I'm guessing this is slang from 'down under' or maybe it's British. I'm right with you on the pumpernickel though.

I could maybe take a guess what this is, but I can be patient and learn something new. πŸ™‚

The best delis are either Italian or Jewish. Plenty of both in Philadelphia, where I was born.

I think it's Aussie slang but I don't know where it came from. It's a very sharp cheddar-style hard cheese.
