Ra:

Cold boot your PC from the ME installation floppy.
At the prompt a:> type FDISK.
Follow the instructions and repartition your HD as you need.
Reboot (again from the floppy).
At the prompt a:> type FORNAT X: , where X stands for any partition you have created thru FDISK.
Insert the CD containing ME.
Follow the installation instructions.

Be aware that FDISK doesn't "see" the entire capacity of your HD if it exceeds a predetermined size, and that can cause valuable free space on the disk to be lost. I can't remember just now what is that limit, sorry... 🙁 (in anycase, google for FDISK, instructiosn of use).

Hope this help.

I tried that format thing again and it's showing fat32 but when I start Xp up and click on the hard drive it shows Nstp thing again.

Fdisk won't recognise an NTFS file system on a drive will it?

yup. sorry... I forget it.

The only way I see then is to use a low level formating utility from the makers of the hard disk.

First of all - what is Nstp? Are you sure it's not NTFS?

Secondly is the XP disk a full retail disk or a recovery disk thet came with the computer?

I don't know what that is. I'm not a computer guy. The guy who gave me this computer with win98 is on vacation and I'm done work next week and he won't be back yet, so i'm stuck with it for now and it's frustrating spending 20 hours now on this thing.

Just a though while i'm waiting. Since I have Xp right now and I have to download drivers for ME if I ever get it on. Can i somehow save the drivers Xp is using and use them for ME later on?

Well you could either read this thread again. There seems to be plenty of good advice in here. Or you could wait until your friend gets back from holiday. It seems you are missing something so just ask him for a hand when he gets back. Hope you get it sorted. 🙂

As imslyp69 said FDISK doesn't recognize NTFS partitions. I stand corrected. Please tell me which is the capacity of the HD. May be tomorrow, consulting my knowleadgeble cooworkers, I could bring you a solution to your problem. I know we solved this problem in the past, but I just now can't remember how... 😳

Go to windows update when you finish reinstalling - for driver updates. 😉
