No.1, is profanity that much worse than constantly belittling *ever ...[text shortened]... improve the Forum environment you appear to be so keen to protect?

(Awaits belittling reply).
Ask Ivanhoe and others; they've been trying to get certain posters banned for the "tone" of their posts for about a year and a half. Insults or ridicule included in posts with valid points about important issues are deemed less moderable here than a stream of profanity designed to test the Mods. Go figure.

No, no, I think you're right - let's keep the current fudge where people don't know what they can and can't say - it seems to be working so well.
I know what I can and can't say. I fully expect a "forum long weekend" everytime I drop an f-bomb or spurn an entire forum full of users with my posts.

When I started that thread and you all joined in, I hardly expected you to go all cry-baby once you got justly banned. Don't say you didn't know what was coming, fer Chrissakes.

Insults and ridicule which kill interesting discussions about important issues by transforming them into flame wars and which are used to deliberately hurt others are deemed less moderable here than talking about the etymology of a swear word, which is actually an interesting topic for people interested in language. Go figure.

Actually, I didn't. I did expect some sort of a warning and a request to desist.

And you expect to be banned for 'spurning' a Forum? Now *that* seems harsh...

What do you believe the aim of Moderation is?

I was referring to posts of a bigotted or spamming nature.

no moderation vs. tightly controlled moderation. I find the current 'compromise' solution a little unpredictable and inconsistent.

I would very much prefer no moderation - I think that's what a lot of us advocate.

I would like to see no moderation. Then we can all, as adults, assess the post. If I read a post littered with profanity in a crass, unclever, unamusing way it would inform my assessment of that post.
Maybe we should ask Russ for private forums where there is no moderation? Oh wait, its already there.

So we have a no moderation forum facility available to us. That's one part of your problem solved.

We also have an in between forum facility which also works well in its job of creating a good, functioning environment where youngsters can take part as well. We all know that if we write anything remotely offensive, then there is a chance of moderation due to the self modding nature of the community.

So start up "Ivangrice's Clever Profanitisers Clan", invite all your friends and assess the crassness of the posts to your heart's content.

Debates: Potentially heated discussions on topics such as world affairs, politics and other such areas of interest

Perhaps you could direct me to the "Use all the f-bombs you want to screw with the Mods" Forum?

I don't care what the "AIM" of moderation is.

I do care when my speech gets severly restricted. Since your "greater consistency" crusade is quite possibly going to lead to greater restrictions on speech here for the reasons already given, I'm exercising my "right" to criticize your "approach". Is that OK with you?

Absolutely - I'm all for the right of people to freely express their views and opinions, using any language they like.

Are you?
