And one thought does spring to mind - there are many people here who want to see some form of moderation, however inchoate it is. But many of these same people are so downright uncivil in the way they communicate on these Forums, I wonder why they are so against the use of profanity...
No.1, is profanity that much worse than constantly belittling *ever ...[text shortened]... improve the Forum environment you appear to be so keen to protect?
(Awaits belittling reply).

No, no, I think you're right - let's keep the current fudge where people don't know what they can and can't say - it seems to be working so well.
When I started that thread and you all joined in, I hardly expected you to go all cry-baby once you got justly banned. Don't say you didn't know what was coming, fer Chrissakes.

Originally posted by darvlayActually, I didn't. I did expect some sort of a warning and a request to desist.

And you expect to be banned for 'spurning' a Forum? Now *that* seems harsh...

no moderation vs. tightly controlled moderation. I find the current 'compromise' solution a little unpredictable and inconsistent.
I would very much prefer no moderation - I think that's what a lot of us advocate.
I would like to see no moderation. Then we can all, as adults, assess the post. If I read a post littered with profanity in a crass, unclever, unamusing way it would inform my assessment of that post.
So we have a no moderation forum facility available to us. That's one part of your problem solved.
We also have an in between forum facility which also works well in its job of creating a good, functioning environment where youngsters can take part as well. We all know that if we write anything remotely offensive, then there is a chance of moderation due to the self modding nature of the community.
So start up "Ivangrice's Clever Profanitisers Clan", invite all your friends and assess the crassness of the posts to your heart's content.

Perhaps you could direct me to the "Use all the f-bombs you want to screw with the Mods" Forum?

So why bother to post in this thread at all?
I do care when my speech gets severly restricted. Since your "greater consistency" crusade is quite possibly going to lead to greater restrictions on speech here for the reasons already given, I'm exercising my "right" to criticize your "approach". Is that OK with you?
