This is no time for levity.

One question I have asked several times (privately and in the forum), but still didn't get any answer to: What are bans supposed to achieve? This is not a rhetorical question, I am really interested in the reasoning behind it.

This is quite amusing. Nordlys wants approachable Forum Mods active in the Forums, while Moldy Crow chastises Phlabby for being exactly that!! The irony is sweet.

They're merely a deterrent.

This leads me to doubt many things you say in either capacity .
I don't deny the problems inherent with being a moderator and also being a "buddy" in the community like I said, I've told Phlab to quit because of the flak he gets.

Alls I'm saying is that the complaining going on about the moderation is nothing more than nit-picking. A little three day ban is no reason to gang-up on Phlab; it's totally trivial.

Read again what I said. I want approachable mods, but I see it as somewhat problematic if they are active in the forums. It also has some advantages, though, so as long as there are other mods who are not so much involved, but still approachable, I think it's okay to have them. Besides, what's ironic about two people disagreeing on something?

Two posters having different ideas about a topic is not exactly O'Henry.

Have you tried approaching the other mods about your grievance?

No discussing grievances in progress.

Too bad Prad the Friendly isn't here anymore. You could all approach him and discuss moderation. That would be a nice reality check.

I approached one besides Phlabibit. He did reply, but he didn't know what had happened or who had given out the ban. When Phlab replied, I got the impression that he was the one who had given us the bans (it was only at the end of the discussion that he said he wasn't), so I didn't see a point in approaching the others. If I had known who had given me the ban, I would have approached that person, and if that person would have replied, things would have been a lot easier for everybody involved.

If I had been quite new to this site, I probably wouldn't even have known who the other moderators are (yes, you can find them somewhere on the site map, but it's not exactly easy to find). I wouldn't call that "approachable".

I'm still trying to work out who this O'Henry guy is.

I would call it approachable. The fact that the other mod replied and assisted you shows an approachable characteristic. You admit you've never spoken with the other moderators so maybe we already have a bunch of semi-approachable moderators but you just don't know it because you're too busy splitting hairs.
