I'd prefer to see people purposely going against the wishes of the mods in the manner that it sounds you did to get banned, rather than having a list of words/topics we're not allowed to use, and an inflexible, impersonal mod system which would ruin the forums, imo.

I didn't really want to get into this anymore, but you are wrong on several points, and I can't let this stand like this.
"First off, you were one of many users removed from the forums for cussing. You didn't understand why, you claim."
Yes, I was pretty surprised about the ban, because I could see that much worse things than the word I used seemed to ...[text shortened]... how am I supposed to follow rules if I have no way of knowing what they are?

Didn't you read my post? I had reason to believe that the posts would be robomoded, and they were. I had no reason to believe that a moderator would want to remove them. So I tried to make the post un-robomodable.
I can't understand how you can't figure out that because it was a link to a profanity, it would be ok, just because it was to do with the etymology of the word. I'd like to graphically talk about sex on here. I know I can't do that, but in your opinion, it'd be ok for me to post a link to a site where I described things uber-graphically, for educational purposes.
I'm sorry Noodles, but its not rocket science.

You just don't understand how this forum is moderated, and never will regardless of how many times it is told to you...
Can you ban yourself, or is this not possible...?
Originally posted by RagnorakWhen I posted the link, I was very careful to leave part of it out so that if you're a 13 year old kid who doesn't know what the word is you wouldn't have been able to figure out how to go to the site.
If the word is banned, why do you think that a link to a whole site dedicated to the word would be wanted here? End of the day, if a parent doesn't want their 13 year old child reading profanity in the forums, why does it suddenly become acceptable if the profanity is presented in an educational manner and is off site?
The site was a "Snopes" page - part of the Urban Legends website - that discussed several urban legends regarding the origin of the word in question, and finally discussing the probable origins of the word. The word was not tossed around gratuitously, and the page was not distasteful. If the moderator in question thought that it was over the line, so be it. I think the point Nordlys was trying to make is that the post she responded to (which wasn't mine) contained the actual word and she was attempting to repost it in a manner where the word was not there. She's not a person who uses profanity and she was attempting to continue what she though was an interesting conversation in a "clean" manner. She was a little put out that she got banned without explanation (or with a less than satisfactory explanation) for doing something she thought was harmless and innocent.

An article about the etymology of a swear word is something entirely different than using a swear word to actually swear. I wouldn't have any problem to show this article to my mother or to a 10 y.o. child. If I were a teacher and had problems with students who cussed, I would talk about what these words actually mean, where they come from and how they came to be what they are now. The mystery around such words is part of what makes them so attractive to kids.

P-
If you were a teacher, and my child showed me that page and told me you gave it to them; I think you would have a tough time keeping your job... or at least your boss would need to have words with you about what you just did wrong.
Originally posted by PhlabibitLike it or not, but your 10 year old will hear words that are far beyond your approval if you are at the least bit sensitive to such things. Preventing them in a forum won't change the world at large. The best thing is to do what Nordlys suggest. Talk about the words with your 10 year old instead of trying to shield him/her.
