Ireland is rewriting the laws at the moment. Previously, we had different ages for the age of consent for females and males.
I asked 3 males tonight about the laws of consent, and all 3 gave different answers as to what the laws were. The answers ranged from 16 to 18.

recently the law against age of consent fell apart in the Republic of ireland.
It was deemed unconstitutional when a young guy challenged the law under the argument that "he thought the girl was 17".
In the UK , there is no constitution.
edit . when i mean fell apart, i mean that the parliment had to sitt for an extra week to rush in legislation to stop paedophiles getting off on convictions

I can see how that migh work for a one night stand... but not a relationship.
You can change the ages in my post to fit a legal need... those numbers would land me in jail for a year if the parents press charges.

Do England and Ireland share the same laws on the subject? State to state here in the US it can be anyplace from 14 or so to 18... Here in my state, it was 18 years each if a parent wanted to press charges.

and Freddie2006 is correct - if consent is given then it is classed as "statutory rape" if no consent is given then it is outright child abuse.
often the UK police will overlook the crime if the female is at least 14yo and the male is anything under 16yo but in the case of an 18yo i think they still get charged
I looked up all this before cause my daughter was interested in an 17yo and i needed to make sure she understood that any sexual contact with him would result in a jail term (as well as a beating from me).
Originally posted by PhlabibitWe discussed reasonable doubt tonight also. If you are in an 18+ nightclub, and score with a girl, is it reasonable to believe that the club are doing their jobs and that she is legal? Should you be charged for rape if it turns out that the girl you scored with was under the legal age? Should you ask all girls for Passport or Drivers License before doing the good thang?

Originally posted by Phlabibitthe laws on this are a joke, the government shouldn't have the right to tell someone when they’re ready for sex. i know 15 year olds who are a lot more mature than some 21 years olds. people develop at different ages.

They get to the room and it's filled with dead animals and heads on the wall.
The father says something like, "I'd also like to let you know you better keep your hands off my daughter, and have her home at a reasonable hour".
The kid is talking to the camera away from the dad and says, "That wasn't a trophy room, where are the cups with little statues, and plaques with the words on them? He told me something, and if it was on a plaque I'd be sure to remember what it was."

Originally posted by Ragnorakas i'm sure you know most night clubs let people in from about 16years old (who do look 18) and with fake id's so easily made and to get hold of now there's no way to tell what age someone is.

it would be an interesting court case if someone sued a nightclub because of this.

And are we to forget that women can also be charged with rape. I remember reading a story about a woman and child who were staying in a hotel in seperate rooms. The woman's friend came to visit and on her way to her friend's room saw her son going into his room with a much older man she didn't recognise. She went to get her friend and they came back, got into the son's room at which point they restrained the man and shoved a branch of a tree up his bottom. I can't remember if they got sentanced or not.
Originally posted by trevor33I don't know what its like in N. Ireland but its certainly not like that in London. As of the last 6 months or so, you need official identification; driving liscense, passport etc... no photocopies or student union IDs
