I think you should respect his decision. He might have started growing fond of you and knew it might lead to some trouble considering you won't be an adult for another 3 plus years.
If he wasn't a friend, he wouldn't have told you why he made his decision and just started blowing you off. That would ruin a friendship more than telling you why you can' ...[text shortened]... I was with her when I was 19 I'd be someplace else right now... and not with her.
