There is something that does not quite ring true in this sad story. A mother who has had her son living with her for 30 years does not go out of town so conveniently.

Afterthought:
If I were writing a whodunnit I would use this scenario with the bottom line being that the prostitute, who had previously been quite friendly with the assailant, was in the process of blackmailing him over her alleged pregnancy..... could it be that shame and outrage had been the reason why his mother had left town so unexpectedly when he confessed to her of his affair with a prostitue,,,, and then the assailant had suddenly discovered the truth .... too late to avoid his mothers' reaction.
Oh Truman Capote, where are you when we need you ?

Except the killer knew full and well his buddy had male genetalia. Maybe they were fighting over the price.
