That's because lawyers have ruined this country. A person who kills while driving intoxicated can post as little as 5,000 dollars bail and disappear...why, because of shiyster-lawyers. Speeding may not make a criminal, but speeding and killing a pedestrian certaily does if the fault lies with the driver. You're splitting hairs, which is what they they don't use dictionaries in Law school?...no wonder the judicial system is F**ked-up!!!
I give up. I try to explain to you the difference between criminal law and civil/administrative law and you start talking about killing pedestrians.

Which IS a crime, by the way, at least you got that bit right. But you seem incapable of understanding that the law doesn't consider all breaches of the law to be of the same kind.

Where I live, possession of small amounts of marijuana was decriminalised many years ago. People on both sides of the debate had to have it explained to them this did NOT mean possessing marijuana was legal! It meant they would be fined for possession - just the same as getting a speeding ticket. And possessing traffickable quantities is still a criminal offence, as is selling marijuana.

None of what I have said on this subject has had ANYTHING to do with my personal views on immigration, by the way. I haven't attempted to go into those views. All I am trying to do is make it possible for you (and everybody else) to get on with the main debate with your facts straight. There are offences that have criminal penalties, and there are other offences that don't.

Go ahead - I have no problem with you arguing that illegal aliens should be deported, or even that they SHOULD be jailed. Heck, I don't care if you argue they should be shot on sight - if that's your opinion, go for it.

But please get it through your skull that the law does not AT THE MOMENT regard immigrating to a country without permission to be a crime in and of itself.

PS We had dictionaries at law school. They were written by people who actually understood what the law was and didn't simplify thing to the point where errors were made.

PPS Actually, sometimes errors WERE made. I was taught not to believe every commentary, headnote or dictionary I read, because they could be WRONG. The law is what the legislature and the courts say it is, not what some dictionary editor comes up with in a couple of lines.

PPPS And finally, I'm happy to report that my regular, ordinary dictionary doesn't make the same stupid mistake as yours.

If immigrating to another country without permission is not a crime, why do we have border guards on duty to prevent this movement, and why do we devote so much time and energy deporting them whenever we can? (with the exception of Cubans that make it to our shores)
I thought this was the premise here, but correct me if I'm wrong. I'm open to new lines of opinion.

Because immigrating to another country without permission is UNLAWFUL.

Please go back and read my earlier posts, and XanthosNZ's posts, beginning on page 12.

Even your insults demonstrate your bad comprehension skills. I didn't say I was a lawyer.

Remember back on page 9 when I made the comment about you having to resort to insults because you can't dispute the actual arguments? That point still stands.

Everyone here has emigrated to this country somehow and become part of it. It doesn't matter if they pass that dumb law or if they get 10 milion of "immigrants out" they will come again and again cause they have realtives in this country and have worked for this country, they'll find a way to come!!!!!!!!!! but u just can't understand that cause u think u have more rights than them just cause u were born here when your parents or grandparents or whatever were immigrants too !!!!!!!!!! Now the Government should be flexible with these people and grant them citizenship or give green cards or whatever!!!!!!

No, it doesn't make a difference. They should be deported and told to use the lawful channels as everybody elde has to, but a few thousand Irish is a dent compared to 15,000,000 Mexicans, Central Americans, and South Americans. Now we have gangs from El Salvador called MS 13 in just about every state and they are almost as bad as Al-Qaeda at disrup ...[text shortened]... s of it. What if it's determined by investigation that a child was killed by that extra kph?
Lol do you really know where these gangs were created and why?????? they were created here in the US, first because of racist people that used to demoralized immigrants, they were lynched by them so they have to find a way of protection, Second, they were forced to work all day with a poor salary!!!!!!!!

I just saw this thing on Good Morning America about people protesting the proposed illegal immigration laws. I don't know the details of the proposed plan, but as you can probably tell, most of the protesters were Mexican. This one guy even had the balls to say "They treat us like criminals." Well guess what? If you come here illegally, you ARE a crimi ...[text shortened]... or a good reason, is illegal. Learn English, learn how to drive, then apply for a green card.
Maybe when a certain tribe of people invaded the Americas. The American Indians were already speaking English and driving around in cars 500 years ago. And when the Indians said Green card please, the white man must of thought, "what they want us to scalp and murder them."
It was the white people who started the scalping.

There was a programme on ta box, about how there were aboriginal African peoples living in the Americas long before there were American Indians and that they were nearly all wiped out by the indians.
The researcher finally manage to track down the remaining survivors on a remote south american island. Also proof of ther existance is to be found in cave drawings. etc...

Like I said before, I was born in England, but if i were to go into a pub (bar) for a pint of bitter, I would be called a coon.
I was happy to learn about India's independence from the English and the American independence of 7/4/1776
