As a fine art a Stradivarius violin is a winner. It is worthy as a museum piece and musical instrument.

INdeed, but it looks like all the others. I, and most people, do not have the eye to differentiate between one and the other. The viol family are wonderful, but they all look alike and differ in size alone. Hurdy gurdy is unique!

Anybody that would diss a Stradivarius violin would also throw rocks at a Mockingbird.

Only at Tequila Mockingbird, worst Mexican restaurant in the unvierse! All's I'm saying is a Stradivarius is notable for sound, not looks. That's not dissing the instrument one bit. Incredible craftsmanship and sound. All musical insturments have their own charm and appeal. I marvel at the amount of work it takes to make French horn and other brass instruments.

Violins look like pretzels.

I like the look of the harp, the sitar, the kora, the French horn.

A violin hater. Turn in your Sir James Paul McCartney fan club card.

Don't mess with mockingbirds. They'll kick yer butt.

Rather doubt that. My strays I feed catch nothing but mockinbirds and sparrows. Blue Jays are smarter as are grackels.

There's always the sneer drum.

- I don't find them much to look at. But add a drummer, put them in the carnival in Rio - I could be turned.

Some drums are much to look at. This one for example: http://i180.photobucket.com/albums/x74/Saamiblog/SwedishSamiDrumMuseumBerlin.jpg

If you add drummers / performance, I'd go for Japanese taiko drummers.

What about the Hardanger fiddle, for example?

I can't agree more. The violin and viola, the closest instruments to human voice and pitch, are instruments to which we have the closest sound affinity. Listening to Jacha Heifetz playing Glazunov, after his wife died is moving - his vibrato is perfectly moving. All played on a Strad. He hits low and high perfectly, and makes one cringe in pain. So beautiful. Has to be violin! for me!
