What about the Hardanger fiddle, for example?

Gorgeous to be sure, but simply a more ornate fiddle. I like instruments departing somewhat from the usual like the theorbo!

I can't agree more. The violin and viola, the closest instruments to human voice and pitch, are instruments to which we have the closest sound affinity. Listening to Jacha Heifetz playing Glazunov, after his wife died is moving - his vibrato is perfectly moving. All played on a Strad. He hits low and high perfectly, and makes one cringe in pain. So beautiful. Has to be violin! for me!

For sound unquestionably, but but for pure aesthetics I'd vote for the hurdy gurdy! Cool name as well! Heifetz was truly great! I have an old recording of his playing the Brahm's concerto. Poetry indeed!

Of course! Seen a theorbo once...
Little pocket trumpet is adorable, granny!
Some antique fortepianos and harpsichords are awesome.

Yes, at first I thought this thread was about sound as well, but it's clear it's about appearance.

For musical instruments, clearly, sound > looks.

Unquestionably sound reigns over look. However, indeed thread is about look. Nothing sounds as wonderful as a Strad!

This one is complicated to play.
