The Ballon d'Or (French for "Golden Ball"πŸ˜‰ is the most prestigious individual award in soccer. Awarded annually by the French magazine France Football, it honors the player judged to have had the best overall performance in the sport over the previous season, based on votes from an international panel of specialized journalists.History and Evolution First awarded in 1956 to English forward Stanley Matthews, the Ballon d'Or was originally created to recognize the best European player playing in Europe. Over the decades, the eligibility rules expanded to include any player at a European club in 1995, and all players globally in 2007.Between 2010 and 2015, the honor was temporarily merged with the FIFA World Player of the Year and called the FIFA Ballon d'Or. Since 2016, it has returned to its original format, and since 2024, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) has co-hosted the gala.

Gunther von Hagens, 81. Controversial inventor of the process known as plastination--whereby a body is preserved w/clear plastic. Useful for anatomists and anatomy students. He trod on taboos in several countries when he took his collection of 'plastinators' on tour; some derided this as a Barnum and Bailey freak show. All the people who were plastinated had consented to the process.

Glen Hansard died in Dublin today. He won an oscar for a song in the movie 'Once' if you haven't seen it it's very much worth a watch.

Britain's best known bird watcher Bill Oddie died 2 days ago aged 85.
"Bill was a multi-talented celebrity – wildlife presenter, broadcaster, comedian, writer, songwriter, musician and conservationist. Yet it was never fame that he valued. Instead he encouraged us to respect and protect the environment."
