McCoy Tyner has died. He was 81. As a member of John Coltrane’s pioneering quartet, he influenced almost every single pianist in jazz.

Someone else said this, not me:

"His chords were the ocean that Coltrane set sail on".

Swedish actor Max von Sydow died yesterday, 90 years old.

A man who could play chess with death on a beach, and Ming the Merciless with Queen playing in the background, and do both with equal panache.

Best known for his work with Coltrane and a long solo career, he was highly innovative in his playing. His chordwork is well-known and he was known for preferring acoustic pianos, only rarely using electronic keyboards. He often reminded me of Oscar Peterson. An NEA Jazz Master, he was highly influential, and highly prolific - his body of work is huge. I was sad to hear of his passing. The jazz world has lost another truly great musician.
