The slogan for the United Negro College Fund, “A mind is a terrible thing to waste,” has been in use for over 30 years. More than 80 percent of the American public recognize the slogan and can accurately identify its benefactor. The theme line has unquestionably been one of the most successful in American advertising history. The slogan and campaign have helped raise millions of dollars and have aided in the education of tens of thousands of African American students. This exhibit takes a look back at the advertising efforts that have been part of the advertising campaign for the UNCF. Through an exhibition of print and television ads from throughout the history of the campaign viewers will get a closer look not only the campaign, but also a look at the oft-maligned advertising industry in the role of public servant.
When the Advertising Council took over the advertising for the UNCF the nation was mired in crisis due to the economy, war in Vietnam, and with minority groups still battling to secure their rights. Consequently, if improperly handled, the advertising campaign for the UNCF could have presented blacks as charity cases, or it could have been viewed as patronizing to the black community. Instead, the creators of the advertisements focused on the potential inherent in the African American community, potential that had been denied due to discrimination and prejudice. But rather than feeling sorry for blacks, the advertisements encouraged Americans to help them help themselves and a campaign and a slogan were born. In the process the campaign has helped not only at the practical level of financial contributions, but it has also helped many Americans change their beliefs about black achievement and potential."
