Here on RHP we have a wealth of musical talent and it seems a shame that it is not better represented throughout the community. So...
Sonhouse and myself are going to run an RHP MUSIC COMPETITION (note the use of capitals to denote the extreme importance of such an idea). There will four categories as follows:
1. Singer Songwriter (Exactly what it says)
2. Band (Anything that requires a number more than 1 to create)
3. Purely Vocal or Purely Instrumental (To give some of you who are budding instrumental talents but have no singing voice to flourish, and visa versa)
4. Covers (Any and all may submit a cover, we encourage adaptations rather than straight recreations)
These entries will be judged within their categories for the following awards:
Best Band
Best S/S
Best Vocal/Instrumental
Best Cover
In addition, there will be awards for the following, which are open to all:
Best composer
Best Musician(s) (technique/ability)
Best Live Act (if there are enough live versions submitted)
Best Lyrics
Best Overall Sybmission
So, if you wish to take part, please PM me with either:
1. A link to your music hosted online
2. A request for me to host your music if you do not have the facilities to do so yourself.
PLEASE NOTE:
1) Music entered into this competition must be:
*You may only enter covers for the Covers category and for no other, all other categories must be originals only
*In mp3 format
*No larger than 10MB and preferably closer to 5MB
2) You may submit one tune per artist/band in each category. So one person may submit 3 pieces if they can fit into the 3 categories.
3)Submission will be open until Jan 9th birthday (My birthday);to give you time to sort out your stuff
4)Voting will then take place for two weeks thereafter so we have a winner by then end of January.
If anyone has any queries about the competition, the rules or the voting system, post them here.

I just thought of something, please don't worry about quality of recording, I'm aware that some people will have home recording setups and be able to produce semi-pro quality stuff and others will have a tape recorder. No worries, just get it down and into mp3 format. If you need help at any part of the stage, just ask.

How do I record music onto my computer?
1) Record it into a tape recorder or some such and then ask a friend who can, to put it onto CD for you. You can then rip itonto your PC
2) Download a free audio software such as:
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/
Which are fairly simple to use and will basically set you off on your first journey into home music production. I am willing to give as much help as possible to get this competition rolling, so don't worry if it all seems a bit confusing.

edit: I'm going to go home and try this thing out, got the program and the mp3 coder, way too intimidated by the plugins at the moment.
Thanks Laim.
Originally posted by hopscotchVST plugins are basically effects units; reverb, delay, compressors, EQs etc. They are like software versions of the hardware racks you see in professional studios. They can also be synth instruments, ie: to replicate a rhodes piano for example. I couldn't live without them, as far as I am concerned they may be the greatest single invention ever!
