Have you watched Ran, Kurosawa's King Lear? It's a beautiful depiction of Japanese warfare set in the same period as this game.

Any other books or films you'd recommend as background to this game?

I really like the small scale of this one. Confined to an island not spread out across a continent or a world.

You cant go past Musashi for starters - there are a number of good biographies of the big 3 (Tokugawa Ieyasu, Nobunaga and Hideyoshi). l have visited Ieyasu's tomb in Nikko a few times as he was the first Tokugawa Shogun and l think worthy of a pilgramage!

I've heard back from the GM and he says he's happy to run a game for us, we need 20 players, of which we seem to have 10 already.

Huck, were you in or not? I couldn't tell.

Will I be crushed because I didn't play the other games?

If not, I'd like to give it a try...

No, there's a lot of people here to help and if you ally with an experienced player, it's in their interests to teach and encourage you. I'll put your name down.

I normally spend about an hour when I first get a turnfile through, then just band about a few emails during the week and spend maybe 30 minutes updating my turn with any changes in plan. Not a great deal of time to process the turn, more in diplomacy.
