I think so, it is an unfair advantage that with a good database can take you well into the middle game, unlike books which aren't too unfair..... Thoughts ?

Insults and snide remarks? You mean, the oft repeated explanation to people who haven't a clue what they're talking about, with detailed breakdown as to why they're talking shyte.

The thing that REALLY, REALLY bugs me is when somebody posts that engines and databases are the same (comparable), so more clueless people reading it might think "Oh look, databases are allowed, and engines are the same as databases, that means I can use my engine to play on here. Yay!"

Way to go, Mr Hyde.

What is unfair about it? Does your computer fail to get results with a key word search "chess database"? The rules allow it. Next I guess you will say the Super Bowl is unfair as the losing team was not ready to play.

I don't think it should be illegal, but personally I'll never use them. I would rather learn to play myself than play moves that people before me have played.

so how can it be stopped?
isn't a database a reference source - like a book?

There again they might think, aha using engines is letting a computer think for me - so maybe using databases is ever so slightly similar. 🙄

What REALLY bugs me more is not the use of them, but the secretive use of them. [ie. pretence that they are not being used] But the standard BS answer is "they are allowed so it's tough"

I bet they are really pissed off when they get beaten by a non database user....haha.

well, after I started using db, there was no effect in my rating. but my games are far better than before. no more homemade ad hoc openings, no more engraving the wrong patterns into your brain.

the best is when you play lower rated opponents who also uses db. they don't blow it straight in the opening, or exchange everything before the tension builds up. you can ctually get a satisfying game against 1200 db-user, and the need to really think about the position. against 1200 non-user it's not possible.

why waste your time with homemade openings when you can learn to do it properly?

Well I only have 2 chess books I got them for 20p each so if anyone has spent a lot on chess books we can equalise a bit and you can post me some. That will make our games fairer.

But really I think data bases are fine, if only one player is using it then an strange move by the other can make it irrelevant. If they player can make database quality moves without one then it will make the game fairer for the weaker player.

But if database users ever play an OTB game they're stuck!

That has nothing at all to do with if it is or isn't unfair. This is not an OTB website.

In a way it does. Why should those who have learnt and studied openings play against someone who just follows a database's instructions? Not really fair is it?
