In Portugal, you must always use the lane, and only use the other lanes. It is illegal to be calmly coasting along on an empty road on an empty road.
Originally posted by zabranSo, you're one of these fools spending 90% of their driving time looking in the rear mirror. Now that's really safe. No wonder your foot's on the brake instead of the gas, which is where it belongs, because I'm sure there's no one in front of you, as slow as you're driving to get tailgated in the first place.
My rule is that if some guy is tailgating me, I step on the brakes... works pretty well as well!๐๐
Okay. Hands up EVERYONE who thinks they can control a car as well at 60 miles per hour as they can at 50? In particular, if you can stop in time at 50, then if you can't stop in time at 60 you'll still only be doing a measly 10 mph at impact?
Congratulations. Your certificate saying "I'm an over-confident fool who doesn't understand the laws of physics" is in the mail.
There is a TV advertisement here in Australia that sets out the mathematics involved, and shows the consequences of travelling just 5 kilometres/hour faster. FIVE.
In the situation in the ad, the difference in speed at impact is 27 kmh. Same reaction time, same rate of braking, but those extra 5 kmh make all the difference.
The car going at 60 kmh hits the obstacle at 5 kmh. The car going at 65 kmh hits the obstacle at 32 kmh. The difference between a bump and a fairly badly bashed up vehicle.
This is the whole point of speed limits! People WOEFULLY underestimate how long it takes to stop once they've hit the brakes, and have no appreciation of what a dramatic difference their initial speed makes.
The accident risk at 65 kmh is TWICE the risk at 60 kmh. The risk at 70 kmh is over 4 times as much.

So ride a bike then and get your slow ass off the road.

A drivers license is a privelege not a right. If they are too old to drive then they need to be taken of the roads much like drunk drivers. Nice picture by the way.
