except for the fianchetto thing that is.

The game is definitely a Petrov, despite him claiming otherwise. To give one reference, check MCO14 page 96 column 6 where the 6. ... Be7 line is described.

If he is the real Mr Seirawan then I am proud that I will be playing him soon, if he is really helping all of those kids to join RHP then we have even more reasons to offer him a friendly welcome to our community, and I am even prouder to be playing him whatever his name.
I am sure that Russ will know the truth when he subscribes and until then I will watch his game with Bbarr and hopefully learn from both players.

All his comments! But, it's inconceivable that a strong player would not know what a fianchetto is. It's an elemetary concept that anyone who is remotely serious about chess should know about. Also I cannot imagine a grandmaster playing an opening and not knowing its name, escpecially such a well-known opening as the Petroff Defence. The real Seirawan would never make such mistakes in a million years! Also his comments and 'advice' on other people's games in the 'Only Chess' forum are hilarious.

Dave
So are mine when I read those I made about a year ago... πŸ˜•
I recall a thread which was about the Morra, I said something about attacking and defending... doh! πŸ˜›

Anyway, please correct me if I'm wrong, but has he ever claimed to be THE GM Yasser Seirawan?

Olav

Edit: And what are all you guys talking about the Petrov? It's a stupid opening anyway... πŸ˜›

Like Dave, I'm also sceptical judging by some of your statements especially in the Only Chess forums.
But I seriously hope you are who you say you are, I have already played against one of my heroes (Nigel Short) at blitz chess on playchess.com, he hammered me 4 times. And to have a chance of playing one of my other icons in chess is tweaking my excitement levels.
Another reason I hope you are Yasser is that I have always wasnted to know why the English opening was completely left out of your Winning chess openings book.
But saying all this, alas, I may risk getting egg on my face but I am with Dave on this one and I am not convinced you are Yaz. I have always hoped to get a chance to play Yasser and would seriously be devastated if my hopes are built up and then knocked right back down again by an imposter.

Nothing 'special'. Most 'good' players play the Petrov from time to time, be it on the white side, lol..

actually you are quite wrong on my type of defense, it is the queen fianchetto defense, slightly different than the petroff. this will be my only rated game here I guess I made the mistake of having it rated. All games from this point on will be unrated so there can be no question. I also incourage you to take a closer look at the 1989 western hemisphere championship, I use petroff quite a few times and do more than draw.
I also mistakenly thought we were playing a Petrov. It is understandable I would make such a mistake, as the Petrov is so similar to the Queen's Fianchetto Defense. The only difference, really, is that the later begins 1...b6, and involves fianchettoing the Queen's bishop.

I'm glad we've cleared this up.

He certainly has. Read his profile, read his posts in this thread where he talks about being almost 45, living in Seattle, coming from Syria and having published 13 books, and about knowing 200 grandmasters personally.

There's only one Yasser Seirawan from Seattle in Yahoo people search. He has the same home address as the one given by the "Seirawan" here.

So yes, this guy most definitely is claiming to be the GM and former US Chess Champion.

beautifully said, Breaca!!

on the internet, anyone can be anyone.

however, you never lose by maintaining your faith that there really are good people doing good things - because they really do exist.
and by believing in them, we always have the choice to join their company.
