beautifully said, Breaca!!
on the internet, anyone can be anyone.
however, you never lose by maintaining your faith that there really are good people doing good things - because they really do exist.
and by believing in them, we always have the choice to join their company.

The gig is up - common sense has prevailed - Russ is on the case. [sigh of relief]

Here the negative consequences of credulity were not significant. Sometimes they are.

Yes, I guess you could say that, or you could just say suckers!
quite the opposite, i think.
for a few wonderful moments, some of us perhaps did believe that this excellent GM was visiting our site.
for a few wonderful moments, some of us perhaps did get inspired by the work being done with the kids.
for a few wonderful moments, some of us were taken back to a more youthful 45, while others were given something to look forward to.
perhaps we have even given something back - perhaps, our new friend seirawan will be tempted to help even more kids and become enthused to work even harder on his chess!

But I very much doubt that many people have been truly moved or inspired by this fraud's visit to the site. It's hard to imagine that any warm feelings generated by the illusory Seirawan would survive his unmasking.
If anything exposed shams like this tend to increase the cyncism of the public and make them more dubious about the real thing when it really does come along. That's another of the serious harms that deception can cause.
(And of course, let's not forget that if this impostor had been a little less clumsy, he could have done actual harm to Seirawan's reputation).
There's a reason our parents teach us not to lie. It hurts others.

you are just kind - in fact, an example for many others here (don't worry, i won't tell anyone what you did to poor rob a couple of months ago).
but jgvaccaro is correct - what was done wasn't nice or right i guess.
but it has happened, so let's make the best of it for now.

If real GM will ever come here, he'd better keep low profile unless he wants to be lynched right away:-) And that's the harm which was done.
i know some very nice people are feeling bad because they were fooled.
nice people sometimes get 'taken' - but that's no reason for them to feel bad about having been nice.
they have done nothing wrong by being nice and welcoming a newcomer to the site in typical RHP style.
this is a friendly place with fabulous people - it's a family!
we're all lucky to have kind people like we do here - regardless of whether someone can fool them or not.
the real loss is for anyone who doesn't belong to RHP! and that is especially true for our 'former GM friend' 😀
