I whole-heartedly endorse more game mods with expanded powers to stem the tide of cheating that takes place on RHP. The various points that no 1Marauder brought up are completely valid, and I think that a new vote should take place that would promote 10 experienced subscribers of RHP to game mod status. Checking in on the reports of cheating and identifying cheaters would be a hell of a lot easier with 10 mods, not 2. However, if found guilty, then I believe the culprits should be banned for 6 months, not life. After the 6 month sentence had been fulfilled, let the offender come back and try to start fresh, and if found guilty of cheating one more time, then ban them from RHP forever.

Because I don't like control freakery.
You can't stamp out cheats, so why bother? It's only a bloody game.
if you think someone is using an engine against you and this bothers you, just don't play them again. simple.
i imagine that guys like ironman31 could win or draw against most engines anyway. if you can't, then you will probably benefit from playing against them. who cares if it is some loser artificially boosting their rating? you will learn something from the game. it only matters if you have pegged your ego to winning here and to your rating.

Originally posted by shavixmirOkay, I can understand that position. But I also understand that some people take the game more serious. Also, there will always be accusations of cheating, and if you have game mods, you have a way of dealing with those accusations. So I think that system doesn't only help those who are cheated, but also those who are accused of cheating without doing it. And if you are neither cheated (or if you are, but don't bother reporting it) nor accused of cheating, the game mods just won't make a difference for you. The only people for whom that system will have negative consequences (as far as I can see) are those who cheat. There are places where you can play with computer assistance, so it's not that they don't have any place to go if they want to do that.

how some people can be undecided or against this idea is beyond me!
... anyways, I think it's a great idea to announce the names of people who've been banned, and if it's just to laugh at them.
I also think the number of game mods should be increased, but... now this could once again be my youthful ignorance kicking in, or my like for Phlabby, but... is it really that important that the mod be a great chess player himself? I don't own a chess engine (at least not one with an analysis function... those cost money), so I wouldn't know, but do you need to be a great player to run a game through engine analisis?
As to the feedback: The one time I found someone cheating (the usual multiple account thing though, not engine use...), I PM'd Phlabby and got fast response which informed me of the actions taken.
As to the person who said there's nothing to gain from engine use: Sponsored tourneys? It might not be much, but still... ya know, the principle.
Originally posted by angie88no because really high rated players are expected to make most moves correlating to a chess machines first choice: otherwise they wouldn't be such good players. it takes a player with a wide base of knowledge and experience e.g. David Tebb to be able to analyze if a player is using a chess machine. I would bet that most of IM31's moves match up pretty well to Fritz; not because he is cheat but because he can see the same moves.

gm ~ 2500 FIDE.
Master is about 2400 I think.
The title of master is a USCF title. Same as expert. Master is 2200 apparently.
Chess is a game of mental agility. It is the game of Kings. I agree with anything that makes online chess as much like the real thing as possible.
If one is against an artificial practice such as the use of a chess engine, surely they must also be against the use of databases, opening books and anything else that gives a player an advantage they wouldn't normally have in a face to face match?
