Anyone know for sure if this movie is being made? I heard they have started shooting scenes.

Depends on the sutio execs from what it looks like...

From Wikipedia:
A live action film version of The Hobbit is scheduled to be released in 2009. New Line Cinema has producing rights, while MGM retains worldwide distribution rights. Peter Jackson, director of the Lord of the Rings film trilogy, was slated to direct the film, but has bowed out due to pending litigation with New Line.

And there was something similair on IMDB.com

last i heard they were not going to use Peter Jackson so i stopped looking out for more info on it.

without PJ they are just going to "hollywood" it and screw up all chances they had at making would clearly be a classic movie 🙁

I didn't really like PJ's attempt at LOTR though. He didn't even came close to the feeling you get from reading the books. And the hobbit is most certainly not to be made into a horror fest, being basically a children's book. It's got a different feel to it than LOTR. Change of director might not harm it at all.

He did some good things with LOTR, but there's a lot I'd have done differently too. I don't mind seeing someone else take a shot at it.

Heh heh...I'd love to see you watch the first scene, where the Dwarves show up to Bilbo's house. He whines like there's no tomorrow in that part.

George Lucas could make it! Saruman the White: Bilbo, I am your father!

Francis Ford Coppola's version: Smaug: I'm going to make you an offer you can't refuse.

😀

If you like parody try reading 'Bored of the Rings', and 'The Soddit' (though not so good as the first). There's a mock version of the Silmarillion (edit: called the Sillymarillion) too, but I haven't read it... yet. 😉

Let's fight Raven 😛.

Why was PJ the right person to film LOTR? Was it not just fortunate for him he could work with the right people who love the books even more than he does? I name John Howe and Alan Lee, or Christopher Lee and Ian McKellen, and the guy from Weta Workshop, etc... Name another movie PJ made that blew your mind away before LOTR (and even after, because things like King Kong are just all about special effects, not pieces of cinematic art).

I still think PJ was not the best director LOTR could get. He was insane enough to try, and in the end I'm thankful for it. But I don't think he should tackle 'the Hobbit'. 🙂

I always thought Ridley Scott would have been the man to do it properly.

Okay, Peter Jackson is good with that particular genre... but I don't see why that makes him the best draw for an epic-fantasy movie 😉.
