Why did you do that?

OK, so now that you did that, I can no longer prove he is a liar only unbalanced.

Isn't it more of a science than an art?

the last time a school shooting came up, I wondered why americans always seem to adopt every possible tragedy as if it had happened to them. if it happens in their state, or even the same country, they get sucked into the media & sales driven emotional bs 'journalism', regardless of whether they have any real connection to the tragedy. back then, someone (phlabby?) said I'd think otherwise had it happened here.

well, the jokela school shooting happened near helsinki (where I live), and I've actually worked near the place, sometimes taking the local train from jokela train station. I also know people who live there, although not anyone directly connected as I'm too old to have that young friends. but I still don't get it. although I symphatize with the victims, I don't feel any more emotionally connected to it than I feel about US bombing wedding parties in afghanistan, columbine high or any other senseless massacre. it sucks beyond words that such things happen, but it doesn't make it any more my personal tragedy.

and frankly, what disgust me almost as much as the retard buying into the american myth of mass murdering being somehow cool (have you seen the lame 'justifications' for his action the guy left behind? they're like he ripped them straight out of a movie. what a pathetic needy idiot), is the reactions where finnish politicians pretend they care on a personal level. popularity points for the next election.

although I in no way blame the 'hollywood imperialism' for what happened, it does sadden me that people are so immersed in the americanism that they'll copy their behaviour from american tv-shows, both the killer and the politicians. virtual reality affecting the real world. and the papers sell like crazy, huge buck in the emotionally exploitative 'journalism'.

the finnish thing used to be to get into some remote place and blow your brains out. the good old times.

Actually, hearing about this story for the first time about 3 hours after it happened I thought the same of it as most tragedies... Terrible! I wouldn't joke about it.

I think I also explained these feelings in the thread about 911 where people want to joke about it. I explained how tragic I believe A-bombs dropped was... it doesn't need to be localized I realized, although 911 happened close to me... but I felt the same way about Columbine that was not anywhere near me.

I do feel that some users would joke about these things unless they were near to it or it affected them, but I can't tell anyone else how to think. I don't think you are trying to defend a reason to joke about these things... I never (or don't believe I ) meant to give more value for one over the other.

Hope you follow that, if not I'll try and clearify my thoughts.

yeah, I get what you mean, but we obviously just react differently to these things. I have no problems with making jokes about it, but I wouldn't do it in the presence of someone with a real connection to the shooting. I might be inconsiderate, but I'm not an inconsiderate idiot.

it all boils down to my strong personal belief that it's better to laugh at death than cry. there's enough sorrow in the world as it is, some of it healthy and a lot of it not. life over death, not the other way around.

I also won't give that shooter the fame he sought after, by buying the papers selling the story. because that's why he did what he did, that's why he posted all those videos on youtube before, and why he wrote those lame 'justifications' for people to read after he was gone, and think "what a dark and complex person he was".

That's quite an anti-American rant, wormwood. You might realize that such traits are a feature of the vast majority of societies after the media advent.

People tend to care disproportionally about what happens near to where they live. I find this perfectly normal, as I do exactly the same thing.
