Such threads make for good reading. For these reasons, I oppose any change to forum rules or implementation of any technology which would give the initial author of a thread control over deleting posts.

Every coin has two sides. I just described 'heads'. The 'tail' side of this is, as Earl noted, that some people chatter, offering nothing of interest to anyone but themselves. As there is no head-end without a corresponding butt-end, we just have to accept chatter as the price we pay to have an open forum at all.
I leave it to the reader to determine who among us says what is so because it is so (not because he says it), and who is the butt-end here.
