If you have to fight, win the damned thing.
They throw fists rather than shoot it out. The bad guy pulls his gun during a fight, the good guy draws first, shoots the gun outta the bad guys hand. Hits the bad guys gun hand too ending his gunslinger career.

And another thing about shoot outs: the good guy often takes a bullet in the shoulder before he kills the badie. There seems to be a widespread but unwarranted idea that a gunshot wound to the shoulder is superficial. It’s not. There is a major blood vessel and a nerve there.
