rwingett you are a goof. Maybe you should be called wingnut from now on!
I have timed out games and I just missed making the moves. Once I was on vacation and it worked out that way. But the number of time outs I have is nothing compared to the guys that lose hundreds of them every year. Those are the guys I am talking about. If it happens due to life issues fine. But when it happens as a regular purge it is a bad habit. At any rate if anyone likes the time outs just say so! Otherwise I see no reason why we shouldn't make stronger penalties for regular occurences.
I don't know what there is to defend with this behaviour and anyone that thinks they can defend it is only wasting time posting here. Again, if there is a reason for it fine. But when it occurs numerous occasions then it is a bad habit.
BTW I quit the Rotating Stars Clan to focus on my own clan. I am a buddy of The Rotating Stars leader and I would never time out games on purpose. The Rotating Stars are a great clan and I may ask to join it again sometime.
So go kick your cat or have a tantrum some where else wingnutt!
Cheers!
I agree with you to a degree, People who timeout to get their rating really low in order to enter low rated banded tournaments are a big problem, just as people who use engine's and software to predict moves etc are. I doubt though that this will ever be addressed as so many people obviously do it. I just take it on the chin as its part of the game and i play for fun not for my ego.
However i think that if a game has been set with a timebank and the other player's time runs out you have every right to claim a win. I did this with you my self as when i played you in a tournament a while ago you were waiting for 10-14 days until the very last second to make a move. Unfortunately for you you waited too long after doing this multiple time to me and hence you played for it although the tournament it was in seems to have stopped half way through now anyway.
I have learnt a few basic rules about playing on this site
play for fun not ego
dont take on too many games as it greatly effects your playing level and hence your ratings
only enter banded tournaments with people on your own level rating as open tournaments are a complete waste of time as you end up playing chess engines and software users mostly
Avoid provisionals with a 100 percent record of the first 15 games this would obviously concern me greatly.
Avoid low rated players who at one time have been 1600 and above rated this would obviously concern me as well.
Finally use your common sense you only have to check out a players past games record to smell a rat
if they have won a lot of games by timeout or by resignation and have hardly any by checkmate that would concern me.
It is amazing how many top players never seem to win by checkmate most odd dont you think
thats it hope this helps newbies and the like a bit π
it would be useful to have a highest ever rating but dont think it will happen its best to just check the graph.
There use to be a useful area were you could check how many games you won playing black or white but since they re vamped the site i can not find it would be helpful if anyone knows where it is now

Originally posted by greenphantomI don't give them the satifaction. I resign except twice in OTB I got mated without seeing it. Sort of like saying, I'm Fired?? I QUIT!!

that would be useful but again i doubt it would happen there are so many people with big ego's who will do anything to win. As i say just look at how many top players never finish a player off by checkmate it seems very fishy to me.
This is a great site and eventually you will find players at your level who you know will give you a good fair game and you can challenge each other all the time and enjoy playing.
Its so easy to spot people using engines etc their style of play is always the same so just avoid them i do if i can.
I suggest to newbies to registered and get involved in a good clan i love my clan and through playing clan games i have met alot of good players who are now my friends and we have great games together and if i lose hats off to them but i'll beat them next time thats what its all about.
Clans are fantastic and there is one out their for everyone so give it ago

Top players know when to resign and if they see that their opponent has a forced mate they know that a 2200 player won't miss that opportunity.
The same is when they lose a piece (very rare, more often they lose a pawn and resign) because they know that the opponent won't trash the game with the advantage.
It's simply another level of playing, definitely not our patzerish world when if you lose the queen there's still hope for a blunder of your opponent that lets you back in the game.
The difficulty is that peoples outside commitments can change quite a lot, for example one of my recent opponents resigned a considerable number of games a while ago due to work commitments and told everyone what was happenning using the vacation settings - since he doesn't seem to make a habit of it there's not a problem. Any sanctions should only be applied to repeat offenders, and then the worst ones; limiting the total number of games they can play seems the obvious way forward, as if they can't manage their own game load, the site admins can quite easily.
I think you have a vaild point there as for Revello's point though i agree alot of people do resign to grand masters if the are drawn against them lets say in a tournament for instance and are a few hundred points below their own rating, if they were getting totally outplayed i agree they proberly would resign.
But then i have outplayed other players in previous games some wouldnt give up fought till the last,so they could learn something. With this taken into consideration it would be logical to expect a higher rated player i.e 1600 + to have still quite a few wins by checkmate. This is not always the case even taking your point into consideration.
If what you say is true there must be a hell of alot of players out there who if you get drawn against them make you want to resign asap because your going to lose anyway arnt you. I just can not see this happening especially in tournament game you fight till the dont you.π
