I'm sure some of you computer savvy people has heard of this, but would you mind explaining it to a poor Luddite? I heard of a "Torrent site" at a Board Gaming site, and judging from the posts I saw, it sounds like it's a creation of the Antichrist.
Originally posted by uzlessNo kidding! It's kinda like Napster was, right? I never knew how that worked either, but I thought Napster was cool as long as they didn't advertise.

I prefer to buy these things as a matter of principle.
First, it's stealing.
Second, if the people that make these things are getting less money, then the quailty will go down. This is especially true in the music industry (turn on the radio for example).
Plenty of mainstream millionaire types don't give a dookie if you download their latest stuff: wutang, radiohead etc etc...
The artists can get their money through other venues, like concerts.
Artists actually make very little from CD sales.

To do this, all you'd need is a BitTorrent client, like uTorrent (just a small free software program you download and install). Then you search online for torrent files. This can be done on isoHunt, Pirate Bay...etc. Find a torrent for the file you want, download it and open in your BitTorrent client and viola!
Originally posted by MrHandI have to disagree with this statement. Often a band's best music is on its first album--the album they made before they became multimillionaires.

I agree though, the artist should be paid handsomely in one way or another for producing quality work.

"I can hear the sound of violins long before it begins..."
Originally posted by rbmorrisLet's take it to an extreme. Everyone file shares and no one buys any albums. Then a musicians ONLY income would be via performances (and advertising if they got famous). I think that people would be less inclined to try to make it as professional musicians. Fewer people --> less talent-->less quality.
