I'm sure some of you computer savvy people has heard of this, but would you mind explaining it to a poor Luddite? I heard of a "Torrent site" at a Board Gaming site, and judging from the posts I saw, it sounds like it's a creation of the Antichrist.

It's just another way to download files that you would otherwise have to pay for. You go there, click a link, save the file, and voila, congrats you're now a criminal.

No kidding! It's kinda like Napster was, right? I never knew how that worked either, but I thought Napster was cool as long as they didn't advertise.

Never done it but yeah, as I understand it, it is much like napster.

it is file sharing. And, if you want to play by the rules, you should also be an uploader which means your bandwith gets sucked away pronto.

I do it all the time.

I have hundreds of hollywood DVDs that I paid nothing for. Ditto for music and video games.

It's not really stealing. I took nothing of "limited" quantity. I simply copied 1s and 0s.

I prefer to buy these things as a matter of principle.

First, it's stealing.
Second, if the people that make these things are getting less money, then the quailty will go down. This is especially true in the music industry (turn on the radio for example).

Mainstream music, generally, has never been good anyway. Its the underground stuff that you'll find better quality, because people are doing music BECAUSE THEY LOVE IT.

Plenty of mainstream millionaire types don't give a dookie if you download their latest stuff: wutang, radiohead etc etc...

The artists can get their money through other venues, like concerts.

Artists actually make very little from CD sales.

What do the record companies expect?

$15-20 USD for a new CD is just too much money for music. Esp when there is only a few tracks you actually like.

They need to price these things better, like in other countries, and they will find piracy not to be such a big issue that it is.

Yes, because they love it. But they also want to get paid. Or do all those musicians that I hear say "and I have lots of my CD's" up at the front just lug those CD's around for exercise?

Essentially, you're downloading pieces of a large file from a bunch of different people, and sharing the piece you have with others. In the end, you have the entire file.

To do this, all you'd need is a BitTorrent client, like uTorrent (just a small free software program you download and install). Then you search online for torrent files. This can be done on isoHunt, Pirate Bay...etc. Find a torrent for the file you want, download it and open in your BitTorrent client and viola!

I'm a hiphop DJ and know how this stuff goes pretty well actually esp in the UG scene, so yeah, plenty of people do just lug their stuff around just to get heard.

Face it: CD sales do not count for any significant portion of an artists salary. and thats a fact.

I have to disagree with this statement. Often a band's best music is on its first album--the album they made before they became multimillionaires.

I agree though, the artist should be paid handsomely in one way or another for producing quality work.

Let's take it to an extreme. Everyone file shares and no one buys any albums. Then a musicians ONLY income would be via performances (and advertising if they got famous). I think that people would be less inclined to try to make it as professional musicians. Fewer people --> less talent-->less quality.
