This is why one house has only 2 representatives from each state, but the other house has representation based on population.
Each state is slotted presidential votes based on representatives which means smaller states get a slight advantage over larger states when compared to a purely popular vote.
If you look at votes by individual counties, instead of by state by land coverage over 80 percent of the US voted for Trump.

If you want to think of the US properly think of each state as an individual European nation within the EU.
