Not sure if this subject has been broached before, but here goes anyway!

I've noticed on a few profiles that people use books and/or game engines during play.

I personally don't use either, when I play it's just me and my addled brain, and I do actually think it's cheating to use anything like this to help you during a game.

By all means study games/strategies (maybe I would be a better player if I did!) but when it comes to playing against someone, it should be just you vs them, not you versus them, Bobby Fischer, Deep Blue etc (slight exaggeration but you know what I mean).

I wondered what other people thought about this, be it for or against...

Whether you like it or not, books and databases are allowed in Correspondence Chess, using any kind of chess program is not allowed (here) and is considered cheating.

This is really one for the "Only Chess" forum.

Do people really write in their profiles that they use engines? WHO ?

Books and databases are allowed; this is correspondence chess after all.
