Sorry about your situation wolfie, especially after having lived through a similar situation 4 years ago. I will pass along to you a pearl of wisdom one of my friends shared with me while I was dealing with the rising waters. He was quoting a story by the comedian Bill Cosby on a conversation between God and Noah when Noah had a disagreement with Him ab is as severe and you lose everything but your life, it can all be replaced. Good luck to you.
Unfortunately quite a lot of people do have some damage, as seen from those pictures; also, where my dad sometimes works (he often travels to Rotherham instead), Corus, the steel works http://tinyurl.com/36eoah seems to be quite badly flooded as well...not good.
The transport thing is quite annoying, but I don't go out much anyway. 😞
Apparently many shops have been flooded in Sheffield, Meadowhall, the nearby large shopping centre I sometimes go to has been flooded and is currently closed: apparently there was 6 feet of flood water in places. 😲
And to top it off, my College has been flooded as well, though luckily we finished there before the floods happened, until September...I would hope none of the exam papers were ruined. 🙁
Anyway, sorry about the floods you had to deal with, hope everything is well with you now.

you live in britain. anything north of england can be considered "the north". yorkshire is, if anything, in "the north of england", not the "north" as this implies "...of the UK"...
Everyone should be thankful they aren't living in what used to be New Orleans. 😕
Being in a flood plain isn't bad if the storm sewer engineers and or levy builders aren't snorting crack while designing the system. And there is ample funds available to maintain it's function.
In North Texas where I live, flooding is pretty bad. I have already received well over 60 inches this year and has rained every day this week leaving almost 2 to 3 inches every day so far and is heavily storming as I type. I am sick of it. How the sky is able to hold so much water is incredible. We have just broken the record for rain fall for the year since 1926 and this is just July 1st with much more in the forecast to come.

What about houses that float? If you get flooded, you just move...
