Some of us have the luck and privilege to control much of our social and personal interactions, many don't.

A couple of thoughtful Europeans ~ both very personable ~ with whom I sometimes have long, beery conversations here of an evening are Victor, a far-right, openly racist Dutchman, who retired here after working as a croupier in a Rotterdam casino.

And there's Chris, a Frenchman who, despite being a wee bit self-conscious about it, has voted for Jean-Marie Le Pen and his daughter Marine Le Pen, and Chris has been here a long time and is not popular with other, more leftwing [or even centre-right] French ex-pats.

Despite our distinctly differing perspectives, they are good conversationalists and we have interesting talks.
