I was born of solid, meat and two veg working class Tory voting parents, my dad's politics, may his soul rest in peace, were so right wing they would have embarrassed Margaret Thatcher. Probably as a kick against that I became a 'Smash the National Front, one out all out, what about the workers' union supporter, which was odd, really, because I never belonged to a union and I've never had a job. I traded up my peer - group, most of whom had more money than me, but in those days nobody gave a tinkers' cuss, indeed 'bread - head' was a derogatory term for people who did. If you had a pair of Levis, a 'Deep Purple' album and enough money to buy a round of ale, you were in, and we used to date posh birds. My attended schools were Dickensian, until we went comprehensive, from whence I walked out in the lower sixth with 10 'o' levels, but that was enough of that, so I missed out on university, went to college and walked out three years later as a self - employed landscape gardener, with a pick - up truck on loan and some tools. Which I suppose is a fairly middle - class choice of career, but anyway there I stayed until one day she who is most beloved said 'Tell you what, let's go and live in Indonesia', so we did, and here we still are, which I suppose makes me beyond definition, class - wise. So nowadays it's all nasi goreng and let's go SCUBA diving, but my roots are firmly embedded in roast beef and Yorkshire Pudding.
