Some of you have expressed interest in the word mumpsimus. I discovered it several years ago in a book entitled
"The Secret Lives of Words" by Paul West. It means obstinate adherence to a traditional notion that has become
unreasonable or to an exposed but customary error. According to the author, a medieval priest in England had the
habit of saying mumpsimus while celebrating Mass instead of sumpsimus ("we have taken" in Latin).
When rebuked and corrected, the priest answered, obstinately, that he would never take someone else's sumpsimus
for his very own mumpsimus. The word took its place in the language in the 16th century and has been with us, in
an obscure way, ever since.
