I hate this boring opening.

It doesn't offer the excitment of a KGA, Morra Gambit or Open Ruy Lopez all of which suit my playing style.

Can anyone suggest any gambit lines in this opening that will open the game up and are there are good books I can get and read on it?

Here's a game by Kasparov vs. Karpov that you might find interesting:

I thought this was an exciting game. My oppnonent made one misstake as black (move 11) though there may be others, arguably his move 13 aswel

1. e4 c6
2. d4 d5
3. e5 Bf5
4. g4 Be4
5. f3 Bg6
6. Bd3 Bxd3
7. Qxd3 h5
8. h4 hxg4
9. fxg4 e6
10. Nf3 Be7
11. Ng5 Nd7?
12. 0-0! Rxh4 (the castling leaves king less threatened than just 12. Rf1, so attack can go on undisturbed by checks, though if attack fails will lead to trouble)
13. Qf3 Nf6 (f6 would leave my knight on g5 free to take e6 and do a lot of damage, demolishing his defence, so the sacrifice is what my opponent thought was best)
14. exf6 Nxf6 (threatening g4 which i dont want taken because it leads to checks, disrupting my attack)
15. Nxf7! Kxf7 (the temporary knight sacrifice was the only way i could see of saving the g4 pawn, and made me feel flashy)
16. g5 Rxd4
17. gxf6 gxf6
18. Qh5 Kg8
19. Kh1 Bc5
20. Bh6

1-0 (resignation)

I once played Caro-Kann and got creamed. I was playing a person rated 200 points below me and almost lost. I was a rook and a bishop down and I just got lucky. Then I decided to never play Caro-Kann again.

Yeah, it had to be that the Caro Kann sucks, not that you hung 8 pts. of material. 🙂

But seriously, if someone is looking for something against the Caro Kann that is open or wild and crazy, why not play the Advance variations where white plays 4. Nc3 and then follows up with 5. g4!?. Or play the Panov Botvinnik Attack, 1. e4 c6 2. d4 d5 3. ed cd 4. c4!

I agree with the rest of the posts in this thread - the advance variation with an early g4 after Nc3, or the lines with c4 (after e5 or exd5) will give you a sharp game, which seems to be what you're after.

I love the Caro-Kann. As an equalizing weapon of choice against vastly superior players, it's something you can't really afford to dismiss as dull or uninspiring, even if it does have the reputation of being the David Batty of chess.

Look on the bright side. The Caro-Kann is a real rarity.

Even so, the Caro-Kann is played about 1/10 as much as e5, e6 and c5.

I actually think that the Advance Variation is even more challenging. White refuses to let Black breathe by continuing to claim territory. But then again, what do I know?

Its more a question of style than of one being better than the other. I feel quite at home with IQP positions so Panov is my first choice, the basic ideas in the position are fairly easy to follow.
