The players on that article are known genuinely strong OTB players like Nakamura Kamsky etc. Short recommended not playing newbies particularly those with a high rating as some of them could be cheats.
When playing on Playchess.com, you have to use the Chessbase interface. Engine users are caught all the time for the simple reason that the site automatically detects when someone runs a Chessbase engine (such as Fritz, Shredder, Junior, Hiarcs, etc) because it has to go through their interface! Therefore it's ridiculously easy for the site to catch hundr ...[text shortened]... ke the occasional human move and throw in a few blunders, the site is unlikely to catch them.
Were people surprised when a number of years ago an IM (probably now a GM) was disqualified from the European Internet Chess Championship on the PlayChess server. The player in question has a St Petersburg win to his name. What was taken into account was not his OTB or any other games but the "computer style moves".
Online Chess servers do not check simply for task-switching but have a number of algorithms including time-stamping. See the help menu on the PlayChess client. You also do not need a ChessBase product like Fritz or ChessBase 9 to play on the server, there is a free client available (that rules out your claim that cheaters are firing up ChessBase products/engines to get caught).
If Short or any other human “suddenly” starts playing like an engine then that user is an engine, even if the engine is on a second PC. Those games are downloadable and used to make opening books. That is how engines end up with 60 game-move opening books in the Sicilian.

I may have played at least one mediocre player who suddenly awoke the GM within and beat me with a series of inspired moves. That being said, all that was at stake was a game and my online chess rating. I'd rather make the assumption that my opponent has come up with a brilliant play on his or her own, even if my assumption is wrong, than accuse someone of cheating when they haven't. It's unsporting and isn't much better than the cheating we're convinced we're the victim of.
I think it's best to take our lumps, cultivate friendships with honest players and strive to find the weak aspects of our game and strengthen them. Leave the cheats to deal with the consequences of their own actions.
... And if you're looking for an honest game, I'm up for one, too! 😉
it's not surprising that some people can beat people that have higher rankings than them. Remember, chess is about war, no random luck decides the game, your victory and defeat rest solely on the moves you make. If you make a huge mistake, its your own fault, and if lose for it, thats your own problem, and your fault.
tell me this i played in a tournament and i was paired against 2 1000 players. they played like they were 1700 and 1800 until i left book. immedeatley they blunderd. but then again i don't know if they were looking at a book since they played like that 25 moves in!!! trust me higher rated players can tell if someone may be cheating easily.

How did I pick up those 2 players because during all of our 2 games they never erred even slightly. Every move was perfect and some were totally unexpected and obscure. The overall standard of their play made me feel very unconfortable.
I have also got myself into trouble against players rated 1300-1500, usually because I played badly and they capitalised on it but there moves were not exceptional just good and correct. They may or may not match an engine but if they are obviously best that is irrelevant. The thing is I can tell these players are not cheating because it was my bad play that got me into trouble not their perfect play as once the forced phase is complete they still manage to make inferior moves.

Interesting description, but I dont think that engines are playing perfect.
The point is they did feel like engines and I was right.
I have 1 other opponent I played here when he was graded about 1600 who I am also uncomfortable about for the same reason.
I have played IMs and GMs OTB and never felt the same way about a position as I do against an engine user. No matter how strong your opponent there are usually stages in a game against humans where they make slightly inferior moves and for a few seconds you feel you might be getting back into a game. Engines slowly, relentlessly, grind you down improving their position incrementally every move and never taking that backward step (unless you are lucky enough to come up with something beyond its horizon). After playing lots of people you get a feeling for that.
I used to think I could tell when I was playing against an engine, but I recently lost two games against tension84 and I just thought I'd been thrashed by a stronger human player. I didn't get any engine use vibes in those games at all.
There are other ways of cheating besides using an engine. For example I think abuse of the 'on vacation' setting is cheating, not merely bad sportsmanship, it's like winding your clock back when the flag is about to fall.
