“It was an interesting game,” Short told reporters, “I had absolutely no idea what was going on. The thing was I suspected he would play the Scottish against an Englishman, so I decided to play the Scandinavian against a Norwegian.” Asked if he was satisfied with his half point against the Norwegian boy wonder, Short reacted: “Satisfied? Why should I be satisfied with a draw against a kid? I’m a grandmaster with 25 years of experience!”...

it's very unfortunate for short that chessgames are not decided on how much hot air one possesses. 🙂

I was very surprised at the opening choice by Short. The portuguese variation at the moment has been shown as unsound, but Carlsen didn't even know the refutation!

    Just watching Shirov's latest game:

    (Shirov is Black)

I know what he's going to play next!

    Edit: OK, so he didn't play 33. ... Bd5! but went for the solid 33. ... Bxc4.

I've never understood why Short get up so many peoples noses. I've always found his responses to the chess press witty, and often true.

it's been a crazy game, but shirov will soon be yet another point up no doubt. the naka-carlsen looks like nakamura has a tight grip on the win. it looked like a sacrificial mayhem at one point, but somehow magnus avoided it all with only a piece for three pawns down. if naka gets that passer killed it's over.

kramnik was a steamroller today, very convincing.

there's a difference between blowhard and witty. it's not a very subtle one.

    Nope. I don't get it.

What about his last quoted bit?

Surely he is just playing down his achivement in that game. To "only draw with black" against the best player in the world. Remember Short only made it to number 3 in the world(though he had the big 2 K's in their prime to contend with:-)).

Interesting. White gets quite a bit of counterplay in that line. I guess Black's rook has to go to h3 and then White plays 34. Be4! Black might be in trouble.

    Fortunately, I would have played 33. ... Bd5.

    Your move.
