Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugTo be honest, I haven't timed out yet, because I haven't had to take an extended trip since I've started at RHP. BUT...It is probably going to happen, and I'm annoyed when people time out against me because *they* are on vacation.
Then why be so bothered about losing games to timeout?
And to be honest, I don't get annoyed....if I was timed out I would shrug it off and say oh well, but, I think having a decent vacation system would make RHP that much better of a site...

Even in smaller places?
A vacation for me is just a vacation. A vacation for me is total relaxation. I don't want to have any obligation to do anything. 100% sun bathing or 100% climbing mountains or 100% snorkling. Or else it is not 100% vacation.
But that is my view only. I think shared with many but not with everybody.
And I agree, a vacation is a vacation.
Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugI already mentioned making it optional when a game starts.
The problem I see is that the new type of vacation system suggested suits one party but not necessarily the other.
So X agrees to a game with Y at 7 day timeout, 7 day timebank. Then after 1 week, Y goes travelling for a month and puts his vacation flag up, meaning that X has to wait for a month for the game to continue, but X did not want the gam ...[text shortened]... someone does intend to go missing for amonth they can chose 7/28 time limits. Problem solved.
I can picture a 'Respect Vacation Bank? Yes/No' setting. 3/7 games last quite a long time, what's an extra 2-3 weeks? Especially in tournaments that go for 1-2 years....
Originally posted by Sicilian SmaugYep, I think timeouts should be automatic. THe flag drops, the game is over.
So you are also in favour of scrapping the 2 day auto timeout on tournamount games?
In correspondence chess, timeouts should be to enforce that your opponent does not abandon a game, and not to force them to play for time pressure.

Agreed. I was never timed out and I don't plan to in the future.
Mobiles, internet café's, hotspots, you name it. Nowadays it takes really special circumstances to not be able to move in time
What's this I see before me? Another thread discussing the ethics of playing chess on a chess site? Surely not.
Lets Skull them before they Skull us!
Vacation flag set? Are you losing, or bored? - Then skull em all - they've got it coming! 🙄
Much respect to techsouth BTW for a rather more enlightened approach....

Yes it's frustrating. I keep reminding myself that in our parents' time correspondence chess with overseas opponents took several months for each game.
