@bunnyknight saidWell put and true.
Yes, that's possible; but even a minor event would cause mass starvation, killing off 90% of humanity. And if only a few thousand survive in their underground bunkers, how long would it take humanity to fully recover? 1000 years or more? And would this new humanity Version 2.0 be smarter and better than V 1.0? Hard to say.
Probably better to die than live under a rock.
@bunnyknight saidthe "preppers" are 100% correct by preparing for the worst. They will already know how to live off the grid. more power to them...

@bunnyknight saidAkin to the old "if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it, did it make a sound?" paradox, I think the same can be true for extraterrestrial life.

We can assume it exists based on the probability and accept that because the universe is too big for humanity to explore we'll never encounter it , or we can assume it does not exist because the universe is too big for humanity to explore and we'll never prove it.
Also why does every discussion of anything related to astronomy always turn to aliens and the end of humanity?
@wildgrass saidThat's simple: When Earth becomes uninhabitable, astronomy is the only way out.

It's like a family living on the same plot of land for generations until that land becomes unlivable due to flooding, and the only way out is to find a different plot of land and build a new home. Either move or die.
@bunnyknight
I think that number is underestimated anyway, it turns out the latest measurements of the milky way supports the idea our galaxy is quite a bit bigger than we had previously measured so that would mean there are more stars, and therefore more planets than we thought earlier.
Doesn't matter much anyway,
it will take worm hole tech to get us anywhere in even OUR galaxy much less a block of space some 40 billion light years across.
Think about that.
Lets run with that 40 billion light year thing.
So suppose we invent a space drive doing a BILLION TIMES the speed of light.
Well well, now we are still 40 years getting from one end to the other, dumbing it down to not worry about the actual numbers and such.
So we improve matters, now we have it at 80 BILLION X the speed of light.
It STILL takes 6 months constant voyaging to get from one end to the other.
Just trying to show how frigging big our universe is, AND we think OUR universe is not even the ONLY universe so there is THAT.
So even if we invent some space drive a TRILLION times faster than light, we will still be trapped right here in our universe and we are just along for the ride, if the universe is destined to squeeze back together in a little ball, we can do nothing about that so whatever happens to the universe will happen to us too, no matter if we live the next 50 billion years without going extinct.

Hot take alert: If we could invent a space drive a TRILLION times faster than light, we can engineer a strategy to prevent the collapse of the universe.

@sonhouse saidIf jumping through folded space turns out to be possible, distance could become irrelevant. But I still wouldn't concern myself with other galaxies until I've explored our own first, which would keep me busy for many years. Really many. Ultra many.

And then, after 50 billion years, and with some help from artificial intelligence, I'd simply figure out how to create a new universe. Problem solved.
@bunnyknight said I'd simply figure out how to create a new universe. Problem solved.you create a new universe every time you make a decision...like which shirt to wear.
It's called the "many worlds" theory
@ogb saidI've never been convinced of this theory.

O.K a decision made can obviously have some effect on the future,some greater than others(What if George W Bush had never been born?) but at the end of the day it's still one world.Unless you're suggesting an alternate(parallel)universe where I exist as "me"
Considering the odds against "me" and everyone else been conceived I find that ridiculous

great article re: many worlds
@ogb
That is all well and good but it seems to me to be putting humans on a much higher stage than we deserve, where the universe deems us so important as to want to dup every twist and turn of humanity.
Even from an energy usage standpoint it doesn't make sense, new energy created every time a kid sneezes?
I think the universe is mysterious enough as it is to be putting out such speculations especially since in science there is this reality check thing called Karl Popper, who says you don't have science until you can somehow find a falsification theory.
Like you can't say God is real, and claim to prove it scientifically because that statement can NEVER be falsified, it is impossible to find a falsification of GOD, just as an example.
