Russ, you may have noticed that there has been some debate about this feature and I would like to make a serious suggestion.
The what:
- make the thumbing of forum posts only available to subscribers
The why:
- clearly it is a feature which many members see value in and that value can be commercialised
- the feature is currently rendered largely useless and frequently used as an infantile lever to overheat disagreements in the various forums
- the original intent of the feature is being made obsolete
@divegeester saidAlerts are only available to subscribers.

@venda saidI would also get rid of them altogether but I don’t think that’s going to happen as too many subscribers like using them. But seeing as how alerts are for subscribers only, a change which worked really well, then perhaps thumbs should be also.
I'm with you on this,or at least,as I have suggested introduce an option to turn them off in one's profile. Not that I ever look at them anyway
@divegeester saidI thought thumbs didn't bother you?

Obviously, they bother you a great deal.
You want to neuter them, just like you got alerts neutered.
Why not just conduct yourselves in the forums like an actual human? Is that too much to ask? Apparently so.

By the way, I've just red-thumbed all of Divestalker's posts in this thread.
I wouldn't want him to think that they're anonymous.
Being such a popular, likable fellow, with hundreds of favorable threads to his credit: He deserves to know which members disagree with his persistent paranoia.

“Neuter”?
Russ saw the alerts function being abused and fixed it; I applaud his decision. The thumbing function is also being abused and the suggestion in my OP would fix that abuse, and add value to the subscription model.
Also… didn’t you leave the site to save Phoenix a few months ago?
@woofwoof saidInstead of behaving like Very Rusty, why don’t you try to make an intelligent RHP oriented contribution to the discussion.

@divegeester saidBut it wasn't being abused. Some people got a majority of alerts because people saw them for what they were... asshats.

It's about time you realize that if you act like an ass, people will respond to you, and if you are just a jerk, you might find their response... unfavorable.
The abusers were the people getting the alerts, for good reason. That's why you insisted they be limited, because you were a butthurt snowflake.
The thumbing function isn't getting abused either. It's just a natural reaction to asshats. But again, you seek redress in the form of limiting the natural response so that you and the rest of the asshats can simply continue being asshats.
@endlame saidThis is more gaslighting.
Only 30 thumbs per month regardless of the color of the thumb.
That would add value to them.
Limiting freedom of expression adds no value, all it does is limit criticism.
You asshats consider this a good thing. So did Stalin.
The ONLY way to add value is to allow people the freedom to disagree. Limiting freedom of expression does the opposite. It doesn't add value, it subtracts value.
The topic of this thread is thumbs. I'd like to propose a simple program change (venda's suggestion above) which I believe would solve the problem once and for all.
Russ, could we please have an option to turn off the visibility of thumbs added to our preference options?
Thumb-haters could forget about them altogether, thumb-lovers wouldn't get so crabby whenever the topic comes up. Win-win.
